Kilik sniffed the stale air of the crypt suspiciously. Right then, let's get this o'er with. he whispered back over his shoulder, his eyes darting nervously from one skeleton to the next. He'd never felt less comfortable underground than at this moment.

Osvald looks with distrust and disdain at the bones about him. 'The dead don't always know they are.' His father had told him once. The Small Teeth were no proper place to live upon, to be sure. ...But even worse, he couldn't imagine being forced into death beneath them.

To Kilik in his front and Anna behind him, Osvald whispers in Orcish through his teeth--hoping the sounds of the harsh tongue will not incur the wrath of whatever resides in the tomb: "There is nothing for the living in this forsaken place."

Head bowed, with his body hunched, almost predatory, Osvald moves slowly past row upon row of desiccated corpse, his wary eyes flitting from alcove to alcove. Every muscle tensed and strained involuntarily. Sweat stood out on his chilled brow, the sense of danger was far too great for him to relax even in the slightest. Through the dim, flickering light, he trades occasional nervous glances with the rest of the party behind him and Anna, raising a silent finger to his mouth in warning if one looks about to speak.

Rolling Knowledge: Nature, and then Perception w adv. from Pref. enemy: Orc for some insight into the reasons for the ornate (by orcish standard) burial.

Osvald will follow behind Kilik, along side Anna, Making every effort to keep the group moving quietly and quickly through the tomb.

Shorjahl moves forward wearily, hoping his guesswork with the runes will keep them safe. He clutches a hand on the stock of his light crossbow, knowing his ability to call upon the arcane is growing dim. He did what he could to save Cuss, and so it was worth it, but he hoped that a more dire circumstance didn't leave him wishing he'd found another way to free the hin.

Noticing the rest of the group trying to sneak through the hallway, Anna raises an eyebrow.  She trusts Shorjahl's runes, even if they do seem less than familiar to herself.  She takes a moment to admire the craftsmanship of the tunnel, someone had spent a lot of time down here making these alcoves.  Not wanting to take the blame should something go wrong she crouches down while keeping her ears peeled for any noises coming from behind.

First roll is Stealth, second is perception for anything that decided to try and chase us down the cave.

Stealth: 13 + 3 = 16

Perception: 20 + 2 + 3 = 25

Custer pays only enough attention to where he is and where he is going to keep from running into the person in front of him. He is very focused on getting his bag of tea dry. When the sack starts to smolder or darken in color, he will move it away from the flame and check the inside. He mumbles when he finds the leaves still moist. "Such a waste."

Little one, hang onto this torch, as Kellar hands it to him. Now give me the tea. Cus hands over the tea to Kellar. Kellar walks a bit slower as he removes his pack and grabs his mess kit and removes a small disk-shaped pan.

We'll put it in this, you need an indirect heat, instead of over an open flame. You'll scorch the leaves and all you'll taste is ash, Kellar explained. I've drank more than my fair share of burnt tea leaves and grounds, continued Kellar. Kellar places the tea in the pan and holds it over the torch Cus is now holding.

Now I flip the tea over and let it rest on the heat, it won't take but another moment, Kellar explained as he re-positioned the tea. Kellar flips the tea again and removes it from the torch Cus is holding. Little one, do you mind placing that torch there in the ground? We'll need to be able to see our retreat if we need to leave in a hurry, he stated.

Actions:
*Kellar helps Cus dry his tea while moving forward with the group. The quarters are tight but he still is at the ready in case of an ambush.
*Kellar still hangs at the back of the group, and is still placing torches.

Custer listens to Kellar, does as he instructs, and watches closely. "Blue man, you are slicker than snot on a brass buckler. Thank you. This ceremonial tea isn't for drinking, though. It is just meant to be inhaled. It fetches a good price in Esmeltaran, and a small fortune in Athkatla. Be mindful of the fumes coming off the pan. It is delightful, but if you smell of it now, we might have to take your weapons away and carry you out of here."

Now now little one, we're just warming it enough to dry it... hopefully, stated Kellar.

When I went on hunts we had to be creative with drying food stuffs. This "tea" is no different, he continued.

There, that should do it, a bit warm but it'll continue to dry out with no ill effects, Kellar stated as he took the pouch from the pan and handed it back to Cus.

Custer takes and puts away the pouch. "If I'm able to get a good price on it when we get to a respectable town, I'll be sure to buy you something shiny or tasty."

Custer suddenly takes notice of the Orc skeleton's arrangement. "Whoa, what do you suppose these are for?" Custer slowly reaches out to take a wooden coin from an Orc's eye.

Here hold this, Kellar says to Cus as he puts the pan he used, into his hand. Kellar looks at the orc skeleton with wooden coins for eyes.

Not sure what those are for, it's dead, it can't spend it, Kellar commented. He then adjusted his pack and and has Cus hand him the pan to put away.

Probably all the same that you don't disturb it, Anna might have words with you if it's one of her ancestors... Kellar said.

The fellowship creeps past the alcoves, Kellar dropping torches every twenty feet and alighting the crude crypt.

The dragoon intercepts Custer, who reached for a wooden coin and ended up with a pan in his hand.

------[Osvald, Perception check results]: The huntsman stares at the wooden coin that Custer reached for. He has seen coins like these before. Osvald's Uncle Arroh wore one around his neck, and once explained its legacy when he was a youth.

They were once known as 'mountain gold', and were the currency of the orc kingdoms in the small teeth, in centuries past. King Ozgut was said to have carved each one with his dirk. Wood was rare in the mountains, and so it was near impossible for the lesser tribes to create forgeries, unless they went into the lowlands.

Unsurprisingly, forgery was punishable by death.

[...]

The fellowship creeps to the end of the hallway, Anna keeping a watchful eye on the corpses as they walk up a gentle slope into another twisting hallway.

They walk further into the depths of the crypt, and it becomes apparent that they are winding downward in a clockwise way.

The air becomes thicker the further you go, and dust and sediment rains down from overhead with every footstep. Sometimes, it seems as if the entire crypt will collapse upon your heads.

Worse still, groundwater is beginning to seep up in pockets, creating muddy holes that suck at your boots. The twisting tunnels become nearly maze-like, with some terminating in collapsed sections requiring a quick retreat into another tunnel.

[...]

After wandering for some time, you find that the tunnel has widened into a circular room of sorts. It is approximately 30 feet in diameter.

The walls here are covered in bones. Skulls - of orcs, humans, and kobolds, create a grim montage along the expanse of the room.

Three roughly-hewn figures of dirt stand from floor to ceiling, buried among the skulls. It seems that symbolically, they hold the roof up.

Across from the entrance in which you stand, another tunnel on the opposite side presents itself as the only exit.

-----[Anna, Perception results]: Anna has been carefully watching their flank, the distant moaning of wind through the tunnels keeping her alert as they progress through the crypt.

Now, something catches her eye among the wall of bones. Within the skull of an orc, on the eastern wall, there appears to be a glinting object of some sort. The torchlight causes it to glimmer and gleam.

Moving closer, anna can see a fist-sized jewel crammed into the mouth of the skull.

Youre in a circular chamber, 30 feet in diameter. Each wall is completely covered in bones of varying origin.

There is an exit to the north, into another tunnel.

Kilik followed Anna's gaze toward the skull. Careful, now; they may do crude work by dwarven standards, but they've a fair hand at traps. I'd rather our little tour of this tomb be a temporary visit, rather than a permanent one.

His eyes were drawn to the strange dirt figures. Now 'an if I were going to make the ceiling fall down on some grave robbers' heads, that's where I'd be startin'...

Shorjahl proceeds cautiously, looking about the small and circular chamber. As the crypt continues in deeper, he doesn't think it worth stopping. The less time spent in this cavern, the better.

"Let's keep moving," he speaks in hushed tones - his voice somewhat hoarse and his eyes even more deeply socketed and haunting in this dim light.

When Kilik mentions a permanent stay, Custer feels himself shiver inside.  He says, "Careful with that kind of talk, Kilik.  Ya'll scare the dragon."

Custer nods in agreement with the observations to move along and follows with,  "Are ya sure we are in the right place?  I thought we were suppose to be finding some dead Orc king's grave.  This whole complex is more of a necropolis or catacomb.  I've never heard of Orc's building such things, have any of you?"

------[kilik investigation]: The dwarf approaches the standing statues of earth, chips of bone crunching beneath his feet in the musty crypt. He can see that these figures were carved - but it seems not by the hands of men, and certainly not orcs. Indeed, the angles and facets are so dramatic that Kilik cannot fathom a tool capable of creating them. It is truly confounding.

But, the wizard leads them swiftly out of this cavern, leaving it shrouded in mystery...

[...]

The next tunnel winds sharply downward into the earth.  A crudely constructed staircase of heavy stone guides them, and the narrow passage is adorned with more skulls yet. Their empty sockets seem to peer at you, sharp orc features staring hollowly into the darkness.

The air becomes warmer, and a series of thick cobwebs demand that you forcefully progress down the staircase. Spiders the size of your fist crawl about in dark corners, skittering away as Kellar's torchlight reaches their many eyes.

The stairs abruptly open into a new chamber similar in dimension to the previous one. It is circular, another 30 feet in diameter, with sharply faceted walls of silt and rock.

The chamber is dominated by an eight foot tall clay statue of an orc king, clad in heavy armor and wielding a massive greataxe. It is ornately detailed, clearly the work of a passionate craftsman. If not for its subject, Custer can tell it would fetch a fortune in Esmelteran.

Another passageway leads deeper into the crypt to the south.

Kellar's torch casts a dramatic shadow on the statue, as the fellowship gazes on. Its details are entrancing, but your gaze is suddenly averted as a peculiar sight unfolds.

The shadow of the statue begins to move, peeling itself from the wall and materializing before you. From behind it, two more humanoid shadows become corporeal, silently standing like eerie, faceless soldiers.

In a nigh imperceptible blur, they rush toward you. Long, black arms oustretched.

Ok guys, 3 shadows have just materialized in the room and are charging you. Youve never seen anything like this, and are oblivious to the implications.

The room is 30 feet in diameter, so everybody is close range.

Shorjahl, kilik, and osvald - i need DEX checks from you three in addition to your actions.

Stats are up in The Lair, should you choose to attack these shadows... Please specify how.

There is a loud clatter as Kellar's metal pan hits the bare stone floor.  Custer moves quickly as he draws his rapier.  Custer steps up to Shorjahl's exposed flank, so that the exhausted human would not have to meet the charge alone.  Custer thrust his rapier, hoping to use the momentum of the thing's movement to bury the blade deep.

What evil be this?! Kilik bellowed as the shadowy figures charged for them. Skeletons, I expected. Maybe a zombie. But what in the name of the Watcher-Over-Wanderers are these foul things?

The holy energy that had been building within him since he first set foot in this foul place flew from his outstretched hand in a flash of light, streaking towards the nearest foe.

Shorjahl's bearded face twists in disgust and horror - he'd seen undeath first hand, he'd even seen his master's necromancy, but this was vile and made his skin crawl. He involuntarily backed away from the creatures as he pulled free his crossbow from its baldric on his hip, marshaling his arcane energies to serve as defense, or as a powerful blast if they came too close. At the outcry of Killik, he waits to see the effect of the holy energy - arguably more practical in this scenario.

Kellar, seeing the three shadowy figures coming from behind the statue, decides to throw his lit torch behind them to give more light for everyone. Not wasting any time, he crouches low to the floor and then explodes into the air, coming down upon his foe!

With a mighty clang, Kellar's axe takes a chunk out of the floor, missing the shadowy figure (targeted Alpha, fyi). Not enough light! exclaimed Kellar.

Orbaugh, stay close!

Any one have an idea about these things?!?

Custer disengages expertly as the shadow whips past him, lunging for Shorjahl and crashing into the wall as the wizard deftly sidesteps the rampaging shade.

[Shadow Alpha melee attack vs. Shorjahl; miss]

Osvald can see the shadow baring down upon him, the dim torchlight reflecting through the spectre like a prism.

-----[Shadow Beta, melee attack vs. Osvald; success]

Osvald feels a chilling, numbing, burning sensation fill his throat as the spindled hand of the shadow grips around his jugular. The huntsman can feel the life being sucked from his body, the strength drained from his arms.

-----[Osvald suffers -6 STR. 7 STR remaining]

-----[Shadow Delta, melee attack vs. Kilik; miss]

Kilik braces himself as the lead shade leaps at him from aside the statue. Mercilessly it descends upon him, but the dwarf easily moves aside as light streaks from his hands.

-----[Shadow Alpha takes 8 damage from Sacred Fire]

Osvald feels the grip tighten, and suddenly the shadow thrusts him violently toward the center of the room.

The huntsman careens into the statue, one last glimpse of its splendorous detail before impact.

The statue shatters instantly, clay erupting in a grand cloud about the room. Fragments raind down upon the bitter melee, but suddenly - a gut-wrenching, god-forsaken sound fills the air.

Osvald is unsure of what has happened. Amidst the calamity, from within the statue, an otherworldly creature has been liberated.

In the center of the room, swarming over Osvald, is an amorphous pink mass of mouths and eyes. Rapidly, each of those mouths begins to murmur and chatter, shrill, wailing, and ululating tones filling the chamber as the creature writhes and stretches in a horrifying fashion. Bits of stone and clay cling to its disgusting ooze as it lashes out, gnashing its many teeth and blinking its hundred eyes in rapid succession.

The sound is so pervasive. So unsettling. That at once, you know what it means to taste madness.

Ok guys. Shadows descending upon you. As you can see, after being hit by a shadow Osvald has lost 6 of his strength. I don't need to tell you what happens if you reach '0'.

I need everyone to make a Will save due to the gibbering mouther, DC 10. Failure will result in the following:

Shorjahl: Runs in a random direction in panic, and cannot attack
Anna: Is frozen with fear, and cannot move or attack
Kilik: Attacks Anna
Custer: Runs in a random direction in panic, and cannot attack

Kilik's blood pounded in his head at the sound of the maddening voices echoing throughout the room.

That half-orc witch brought you here...it's HER fault...she'll be the death of you...save yourself...KILL the witch...

NO! he shouted, shaking his head to clear the influence of the crazed voices. ...it's not her fault. Steady yourselves! Bring 'em down!

He turned back towards the shadowy being, furious, and roared a dwarven oath as the power of Marthammor Duin poured out of his fist in righteous torrent that flew toward the shadow in the shape of an enormous mace made of pure light. Yer have no place here!

Attack: 18 Guiding Bolt on Shadow Alpha hits for 4d6 radiant damage - The next attack roll against it has advantage.

Osvald felt deaths touch upon him in the shadows grasp. In the tomb, he was ready for traps, pursuers, even a twitching reanimated skeleton of some ancient orc lord... But shadows themselves leaping to life? The woodsman was wholly unprepared and caught utterly flatfooted.

The shadowed hand closed around his throat with a grip like iron and ice.

His face went pallid and his muscles slackened, like a tired child he drooped to the floor. His breathing was instantly laboured and fitful. He was being... consumed... somehow by this thing.

He managed to swing a laboured eye upwards as the dark thing flung him into the clay statue, Face first. His chin cracked sickeningly, teeth snapping like a trap against his tongue and lip, severing a portion of each. His brow splits and ushers forth a crimson river down his cheek. His nose bursts with blood and his lip splits in two places from the impact, as dust and writhing flesh suddenly swarm all around him. A creature from beyond his plain imagination was before him, terrible in its grotesqueness. A thousand voices leapt into his mind, and time became an upstream swim against a torrent of blood.

'...No, you're all dead.' The woodsman's flat acceptance of the finality of death was the only thread that kept him sane in the monstrous face of insanity. After a moment that stretched for a lifetime of withering agony, the woodsman pulled free--or was dropped, he couldn't be sure--and turned back the way he came, his face already swollen and destroyed. One bleary eye peered dimly out from the red mess, feral and beast like. He could not meet death like this.

Blood and tears streaming from his obliterated face, Osvald lets out a wild yell, and tumbles blindly into the dark...

Gonna make my Save Roll, then will make a full post with actions and such.

I told you you would kill everyone you cared about...

Anna snaps out of her haze and steps forward, placing herself between her fleeing allies and the monstrosities in the room with them.  She considers briefly using her thunder wave, but the noise would probably draw even more unwanted attention.  And besides, after the twenty-four hours she's had, it was going to be fun to let loose a little.

With a primal scream she leaps foward, axe and shield at the ready, and drives the axe down into the nearest shadow beast.  When your enemies are stupid, take out the small ones first.  Work your way up to the biggest last.  Thar's axe seemed to drive his lessons home even further.

Action: Rage and attacking Shadow Beta.  Rolls coming.

Well. That was disappointing.

Shorjahl reeled back as the fleshy madness was released from its chrysalis. His vision narrowed, a powerful chiming emanating from within his head - drowning out the sounds of his friends - the shrieks of the creature - the battlecry of Anna as she charged - the prayer of Killik - even the piteous whimpering of Osvald as he cowered into the darkness.

The arcanist realized something within him was protecting him from this aberration - this grotesquely incomprehensible creature. He noticed his wrist felt hot - his fingers practically bursting with the pressure of his blood flow into his hand. He briefly looked down, and saw the entirety of his bracer alit with brilliant white light - the chime's resonating timbre surrounding and enveloping him in the cavern.

Shorjahl drops his crossbow, allowing it to swing wildly from its sling and baldric draped over his chest. He runs to the side so as to position himself in alignment with the three shadows and the writhing mass of hideous flesh. His jaw opens wide, the tendons and veins in his neck standing out pronounced, his bracered hand reaching out toward the creatures in front of him. His brows furrow and eyes squint with cold rage - his scream silent in the now pervasive chime that fills the chamber.

If he'll die - he'll die as a warrior, slaying this foul beast. His training wouldn't be meaningless, and he wouldn't let his gift go to waste. Not any more.

A massive blast emanates from his fist, cascading over the shadows and the oozing pile of mouths and eyes. His fingernails crack - his eyes turn bloodshot, his clothes and hair blow back from the force of the energy cascading from his bracer. He will die trying to kill these things.

Force energy ripples through the air, rending the Gibbering Mouther like a thousand knives as its fleshy, eye-baring skin is torn asunder. The beast lets out a terrifying screech, and the maddening sounds pick up their tempo as it spills out menacingly over the floor.

The largest shadow de-materializes amidst the din, dissolving into the air even as its two parallels charge upon the party.

Osvald, fleeing in terror, feels the tendrils of the shadow whiff past his face. The hiss of disdain - otherworldly - that follows is unsettling.

------[Shadow Delta, melee attack vs. Anna; Hit]

Anna, axe raised, sees the shadow barreling down upon her as her mind is clouded with the incessant gnawing of the Gibbering Mouther. Kellar's fallen torch flickers erratically, and the shadow seems to grow in tandem as it reaches out furiously for the barbarian.

Anna lifts her weapon to block, but its hands pierce through the axe heft and touch deep within her chest.

She can feel her breath being taken away, staring into the maw of silence and nothingness as her body is drained of its energy.

------[Anna loses 2 STR points; 12 STR left]

The Gibbering Mouther oozes out over the floor, gnashing its teeth angrily as the torturous noise continues.

As the shadow materializes behind Anna, the mouther flings itself at the half-orc with a sickening squishing sound. She can hear it coming, its hundred mouths chattering and preparing to devour her.

She easily sidesteps the charge, the chaos beast crashing upon the ground and reforming into a mass more sickening than the last.

Angrily, the Mouther flails back and forth, a thick froth of blood and spittle raining upon the party. The monster recoils, and seems to choke on something - and then, its largest mouth spits the most horrid, reeking gob of black slime that you have ever seen towards Kilik and Shorjahl.

The priest and the sorcerer see a blindingly bright light explode as the slime hits the ground in front of them, tearing into their corneas.

OK guys. I need Kilik and Shorjahl to make a DEX save of 13 or be completely blinded for next turn. While completely blinded, the only way to make an attack is if a party member calls out the relative location of an enemy near you. THEN - you can make an attack with Disadvantage.

The catch is in this situation, that anyone who fails the WIS save vs. the Gibbering Mouther cannot call out a location.

This turn, everybody must again make a WIS save DC 10 or succumb to the gibbering.

Kilik - Will run in a random direction
Kellar - Will attack Shorjahl
Anna - Will attack Kilik
Osvald - Will stand still, granting advantage to any enemy attacking him
Custer - Will stand still, granting advantage to any enemy attacking him
Shorjahl - Will attack Osvald

EXP: +20 each
