Chapter Two - Page 2 Empty Re: Chapter Two

Post  Ao Mon Dec 01, 2014 12:34 pm

Andrianna pauses to look up at Kellar, as Osvald and Custer tend to the soup-pot with the fresh catch of fish.

Geld and Cherous sit by the fire, talking quietly and watching them cook.

Andrianna is sitting at the long, wooden supper table. Her longsword is upon it, and she oils the blade absently.

“Your journeying costs will be covered, lancer.” she says matter-of-factly. A sly grin crosses her lips.

“Cherous has already offered us horses from his stable. And we’ve enough dried foodstuffs from Gaoler’s bend to make it to Esmeltaran and back. We don’t pay for whores or bards. So unless those are to your taste, you’ll be fine.”

She sits back in the chair, sliding the blade into its’ scabbard.

Geld looks to Kellar, a pleading look in his eyes. It is clear that Andrianna’s antagonism is par for the course.

[…]

The evening passes with relative comfort. There is a degree of awkward pause in the air, but Geld is kind enough and regales you with a few tales of their journeys.

Allegedly, Geld and Andrianna are from Waterdeep originally, where the Harpers have a strong presence. They traveled to Candlekeep, and then Tethyr several months ago on Harper’s business.

They are new to Amn, and have found it none too pleasant. Geld withdraws a crescent-shaped cloak-pin from his pocket, the sigil of the Harpers.

“We wore our crests in Murann, thinking nothing of it. Until a merchant espied it in the marketplace, and turned the whole damn bazaar against us. By the time we made it to the gates, the guards had started chasing us as well. We spent the night in the small teeth, after that.”

Andrianna laughs quietly as Geld recounts the tale. Then, abruptly, she takes leave and heads up to bed.

Geld waits for her to go, and then speaks quietly.

“Don’t judge her too harshly, fellows. I’ve no idea of her past. She does not speak of it. She’s more obnoxious and arrogant than half the sailors in Luskan. But her hearts in the right place. She’s saved my hide more than once, and whether she likes you or not, she’ll offer you the same courtesy if you fight for the Harpers.”

[…]

Dawn breaks beautifully through the aged glass of the cottage windows, and you find yourselves more well-rested than you can remember being in ages.

Cherous greets you in the great room. A smattering of dried meats and cheese are spread upon the table.

“Sorry for the humble breakfast, heroes.” smiles Cherous.

“I would aspire to something more extravagant, but without a scullery I’m at a loss. And besides, I received a raven from Gaoler’s Bend this morning. I’m obliged to be leaving.”

He bows to all of you, as Geld and Andrianna descent the staircase from their quarters.

“Farewell, heroes! You’re welcome as always in Gaoler’s Bend. Oh, and Shorjahl…”

Cherous reaches in to his coat pocket, withdrawing an envelope and handing it to the mage.

“This arrived for you as well. That tinker from Gaoler’s…ah, I cannot remember his name. Regardless, a bird arrived for you this morning. From where, I’m not sure.”

“May the road be kind to you, fellows!”

With that, Cherous turns and leaves the cottage.

[…]

Geld is lively this morning, speaking of the most appropriate way to reach Esmeltaran. The roads have been dangerous of late. Orcs and goblins by the hundreds have become emboldened. Caravans without a dozen guards have become uncommon.

“Perhaps we ought to join one of them, instead?”

Andrianna scoffs.

“Surely the great Geld isn’t afraid of an orc or two. We’ll ride on our own horses.”

Geld rolls his eyes, and looks to you.

“What think you, heroes? Horseback? Or caravan?”

[…]

Shorjahl looks at the letter, and his heart nearly stops.

The wax seal on the envelope is familiar. It is a wingless bird, with an eye inscribed upon its chest.

Bargerohn’s house crest.

Opening the letter, only a few word have been written in shoddy-looking ink.

“Shorjahl. I need you. The Red Hand. You’ll know. Baldur’s Gate.”

=======================

Ok guys! Time to make some travel preparations.

Shorjahl, you’ve no idea what “The Red Hand” in Baldur’s Gate is.

Post  Custer Thickett Mon Dec 01, 2014 4:37 pm

Custer looks at the catch, "Oh boy this is a lot of fish!" Then up to the sky, "Thank ya, Golden Lady!"  Custer looks up at Osvald.  "This place would suit any name well.  I hope that we can do ya family honor in our care for it."

...

Inside, Custer uses Kellar's pan to fry the fish.  He cuts several slices of Orbaugh's apples into the pan, and dumps the lot into the pot when ready.  He listens to Andrianna, and comments from over the pot, never looking her way,  "In town, mayhaps we will need to be paying for both to get information on the Shadows.  Drunk tongues are loose with whores, and most bards worth their salt in Esmeltaran can recall the talkings they overhear.  Five fellas walked in the vault, ya say?  Might be one in that lot was calmly enough for a girl to remember his story, ya?  Best let me take care of the things like that.  Being careless with the likes of them is a quick way to let everybody in town learn your name and purpose."

...

During dinner, Custer explains that several criminal groups and affluent families in Esmeltaran work together, meeting and colluding to oppress rivals and subvert Athkatla's rule.  "I have deep ties with some in the Cartel, but they won't do ya much good if certain members find out I'm back in town.  I can try to find out if the group is involved or knows anything of this heist, if ya'll let me do it quietly.  Let's not go knocking on Thickett's door, ya?"  Custer winks at Osvald.

...

After dinner, Custer speaks with Osvald by the fire.  "Might be they will be helpful on the road, and might be that they will get in the way in town.  All the same, I'll ask em."

Custer waves Cherous over, and ask, "Me Lord Mayor, beg ya pardon, but might it make sense for a couple of ya hunters to travel with us?  They could bring the horses back to the Bend.  While we are in town, we'll hardly need them."

Caravan's the safer route, but we'll make better time on our own. 'An time is pressin'; we'll be wantin' to make what speed we can 'afore yer trail goes cold. I'd rather have me feet on the ground than me arse in a saddle any day, he sighed heavily, but I think there's nothin' for it but to take the horses an' ride 'em hard. Kilik grimaced at the thought.

The Master Dwarf is right that a caravan would be safer, but I guess we can use the opportunity to see if Adrianna can use her charm on any dangerous foes we encounter. I say we ride on horseback and make our way as fast as we can, Kellar concluded. Let me know when you're ready to set out, I'll just need to grab my gear and prep a horse.

Post  Shorjahl Tue Dec 02, 2014 1:49 am

Shorjahl seems hesitant to answer, thoughts weighing heavily upon his mind. Finally, he comes to some kind of mental conclusion, marching forward stridently and confidently. He gathers his things with brisk haste, clenching his jaw and drawing his brow down simultaneously. He makes hard eye contact with the Harpers, "I'll go with you. Let's not waste any time."

The shadow of the book in the bottom of his pack whispers...

Osvald will make ready to travel, selecting the same horse and speaking to a few of cherous' huntsmen that may accompany them to the city.

Post  Ao Tue Dec 02, 2014 7:05 pm

Cherous tips his hat on the way out the door.

“Would that I could provide you with an escort from Hoat’s Pasture, my friends. But that’s a conversation with Argus, and he’s shorthanded as it is. The horses are yours, keep them. My stables are full.”

He smiles, ducking out the door.

[…]

[DM note: From what I can tell, the popular vote is that you ride to Esmeltaran of your own accord, on horseback]

The afternoon sun breaks through the overcast Amnian sky, as you find your way upon the main road to Esmeltaran. It’s been several hours that you’ve ridden through the countryside around Gaoler’s Bend, and now the more direct tradeway beckons.

But, as the Harpers have remarked previously, the flow of wagons and trade caravans certainly seems sparse. And those that do deign to travel along this way seem to do so in great number.

[…]

Another hour passes by, and you find yourselves along a high ridge that winds down into a flattened valley, where sparse tree cover offers you vantage of the passway.

Ahead, Andrianna espies a sight that causes her to gesture a ‘halt’.

Looking over the ridge, you can see an orc raiding party winding its way through the valley. From this vantage, you can see a dozen goblin outriders leading wargs and a host of orc warriors. They are perhaps a mile away.

Geld speaks quietly, despite the distance.

“Gods. This is unnatural. Where are the road wardens?”

Andrianna is silent.

Geld speaks again.

“Fellows, I recommend we give this group a wide berth. Good that we did not partake in a caravan, or we would have ridden right in to that ambush. We’ll lose an hour by going across the bridge to the east, but it will put us out of harms way.”

===============

Ok guys, so you’re upon a high precipice looking down at this group of raiders that are winding their way along this trade route eastward.

The raiding party is heading toward Esmeltaran, so you will need to circle around them. Unless you’d prefer to try and skirt their flank, and outspeed them along the trade route. It’s up to you.

It is very uncommon to see a warband of such size along a well-traveled trade route.

Shorjahl would squint and observe how many of the raiders there were, as well as their typical strength compared to the Laughing God followers he had slain only two days ago.

"We should hurry to Esmereltan and warn them. Osvald, are our horses swifter on the plain than their wargs? Some of us might stay behind and harass them while others ride ahead." He takes a few plodding steps forward atop his steed, grimly looking down at the goblinoids. "I am certain I could put a dent in their number without much risk to myself."

Post  Forgeless Kilik Tue Dec 02, 2014 8:34 pm

Kilik's eyebrows arched in surprise at Shorjahl's suggestion of attacking the warband themselves.

The road'll be safer with us alive on it, rather than filled with arrows. The price of an hour out of our way an' some hard ridin' afterwards will be well worth payin' if it puts us in Esmereltan ahead o' that lot. There's a time and a place for heroic last stands an' all, but there's no call to go seekin' 'em out; I'm sure we could give 'em a surprise to remember...but it's what happens after that leaves a sour taste in me mouth.

------------------------------

Kilik is on board with Geld's suggestion of the eastern bridge; dwarves aren't built for outriding wargs on an open plain, and is concerned that any kind of direct assault will leave them exposed and quickly overwhelmed by sheer numbers.

Post  Osvald Hale Tue Dec 02, 2014 9:33 pm

Osvald shields his eyes from the sun and curses under his breath at the orcs across the broad vista. Spitting on the ground, he skirts his mount up the ridge alongside Shorjahl;

"In my experience, a horse is better for endurance but wargs win in the sprint. The hungrier wargs get, the faster they run--and horseflesh probably tastes a hell of a lot better than whatever scraps the greenskins give 'em. We could catch 'em, aye. But in the open they'd encircle us and if the fight goes sour we'd never be able to break from 'em." The ranger pauses and sighs, "Killik and Geld are right. As much as I hate to leave the bastards living, I say we sally back 'round and continue toward Esmereltan. If the wardens are missing the town's folk would know before the week was out. The harpers already mentioned caravans taking double and triple guards... Best thing for us to do is move quiet and quick, bring word to the city guard. They can establish a proper militia and drive those filth back into the hills. Time comes for that," Osvald says with chuckle, "You and I can be first to volunteer.

Osvald's grin broadened and he clapped Shorjahl on the shoulder as he rode back past him toward their trail. The ranger wasn't sure what had happened to the quiet man with the fancy tricks he'd met a few days past, but he decided right away he liked this new, brash, Shorjahl. A warrior hitting his stride.

'Nothing like a bit 'o glory n' bloodshed to embolden the heart.' He thought to himself as he rode to the front of the party to blaze a new trail. One to take them safely around the passing war band, looping westward against the Orc direction of travel before turning back toward Esmereltan.
...

When the groups comes to the beaten path left by the mass of passing Orcs, Osvald will call a dismount and spend a few minutes investigating the area while the others have a moment to rest. Satisfied with his examination, He'll relay the exact number and makeup of the Orcs to the party, and the Harper agents, that they may properly warn Esmereltan as Shorjahl said, Before carrying on.

Kellar rides up alongside Shorjahl and Osvald, Let's stay alive and take the passage away from that warband. Even you have limits Shorjahl, chuckled Kellar. I would have an advantage against the warg riders, but that isn't enough to turn the tide against so many. He leans in a bit closer and whispers, Besides, we have a dwarf riding a horse. Not that I don't doubt Master Kilik, but you have to admit he looks uncomfortable on a mount. If he's unhorsed, he'll be trampled and torn to shreds by the wargs.

Kellar kicks his horse along after speaking with Shorjahl and Lord Hale and moves toward Adrianna...

Excuse me, Ms. Adrianna, if you'd have a moment when we reach Esmeltaran, I'd like to spar with you a bit. Leave the whores and such to Little One to pilfer information. What do you say? One lancer to a soldier, he stated, waiting for her answer.

Following Shorjahl and Osvald's lead, Custer shields his eyes and tries to get a good look at the Orcs.  "Are they Grol's?  Are they in chainmail?"

Custer nods as Kilik and Osvald convince Shojahl to hold.  He turns to Geld and smiles as he comments, "Don't let the dwarf's caution fool ya, Harpers.  If Shorjy wants em dead, it'd take more than an army to stop em.  He's so mean he whoops his own ass twice a day."

...

Once on the move again, Custer turns his thoughts inward.  It doesn't look good, love.  Might be I can't get home even IF I wanted to.

Agata said, 'It's better if you don't go back.  You do not need to see her again.'

Custer was silent a moment, taken aback.  Her?

Agata did not elaborate, which left Custer frustrated.  His face reddened.  Roslyn?  You don't want me to see my own sister?

Agata replied, 'If it weren't for her, I'd still be alive.'

This was the first time he had heard Agata accuse his sister, and Custer did not take it well.  In a flash of anger, he yelled aloud, "She had nothing to do with it!"

He was mildy aware he made a scene, but the brooding inside him eclipsed any concern.  Custer looks at you, but his gaze is far away.  With a quieter, quivering voice, he says, "She'd never do that to me."

Kellar was near Adrianna when he heard Cus, -ad nothing to do with it!"

He turned his head and looked hard at Little One. He narrowed his focus as he muttered, "She'd never do that to me."

Everything alright little one? Were you talking about Adrianna here, he questioned as he thumbed toward Adrianna, who appeared to still be in a tempered mood.

Orbaugh, I don't think your Master or the others have had enough time to rest. We've barely accomplished one task and now we're onto another.

Custer's gaze remains fixed, but his eyes moisten as he says, "No, Roslyn. Agata's wrong. My sister would never take her away from me." Custer reaches for his necklace of charms, and rubs the symbol of Waukeen hanging there.

After a moment, Custer's eyes go wide and dart as his skin goes pale. "Gods, what did I say?"

[Shorjahl, Perception]

From upon the hillside, Shorjahl can see that these orcs and goblins are moving with purpose. They are a cohesive unit, not at all like a rag-tag band of raiders or brigands.

What is troubling, is their militant precision.

Geld nods at the fellowship’s plan to follow Osvald wide around the bend.

[…]

The huntsman steps down from his horse, a cool wind blowing across the plain.

The muddied footprints and tracks from the warband betray all manner of information.

[Osvald hale, Nature (+Natural Explorer)]

Looking upon the tracks, Osvald can tell that no less than 50 orcs and goblins trundled through here, with perhaps a dozen or more wargs. The goblins lead the way, followed by the orc warband, with the wargs flanking both sides.

Given the profile of the tracks, it is clear they were moving quickly. Not the meandering behaviour of an ambushing band of brigands. Indeed, the concerted march of a militant cadre of soldiers.

[…]

It is approaching twilight when the walls of Esmeltaran rise up from the plain.

The cracked, muddied road winds over a fast-moving river, where a gatehouse stands a mile from the walls.

As you pass, the guardsmen within wave at you haphazardly.

The road bears a steep incline, dipping past several large farmhouses on the outskirts of town. Personal militia patrol on horseback, a dozen different farm guild sigils emblazoned on their frumpy tabards.

[…]

The late-day sun glistens off of Lake Esmel, where the stone walls of Esmeltaran sit squatly on its shore.

It is a sprawling city, to be sure. But one without impressive towers or high-peaked tenements.

The large iron portcullis of Esmeltaran’s west gate is propped open. Custer has never seen it so unlively. Typically, morning through night, trade caravans, wagons, and passerby’s are traveling through the gate. There has always been a long queue to speak with the customs marshall.

But now, the fellowship approaches the marshall’s stand with no issue. From atop the wall, several halfling guards look down upon you.

You look beyond the gate into the streets of Esmeltaran. They are moderately busy, with bazaar carts and merchants traveling to and from the main market square further in town.

The marshall, a gaunt looking man with a scraggly neckbeard, walks out from his stand and waves you to stop.

“Esmeltaran customs and trade guild bade you to speak your business. State your city of origin, and your duration of stay, if impermanent.”

He sounds bored as he speaks.

Geld pipes up.

“Well met, Marshall. We hail from Athkatla, here on a small business endeavour. We-“

The marshall holds up his hand and stops Geld mid-sentence.

“Yes yes, fill out these papers expediently, and make your way through the gate. Athkatla indeed. I didn’t know anyone from the great city of splendours gave a goblin’s arse about our bustling hub of trade and fortune. Mind your attitudes.”

He turns on his heel and walks back into the stand, drinking indiscreetly from a hip flask.

Beyond the Marshall, in the stand, Custer sees a face he recognizes immediately.

Egev the Assaulter, a low-level enforcer for House Thickett, is sitting with his feet propped up on the table. He drinks from a large bottle of wine. He catches a glimpse of you, furrows his brow briefly, but goes back to drinking.

Geld shrugs, signs the papers, and escorts you into the wide roadway of the city.

“Well fellows. Now, we work."

=================

Ok guys, welcome to Esmeltaran.

You find yourselves in the west most portion of the city, where several guild warehouses and modest residential dwellings are just beginning to light their lanterns.

Custer, you’ll be the ‘chief imaginer’ of Esmeltaran, given your history here. Within the constraints of the attached map, feel free to refer to places, and even give them names, if you like.

I’m open to any of you who are looking to purchase anything specifically, from the market square. Make it a footnote in your post, because as usual I’d prefer to not split the party and deal with five separate posts in five separate locations.

So let’s strategize on where you’re going, and how you plan on beginning your investigation to ferret out the forger.

EXP: +20 to each of you

Chapter Two - Page 2 Empty Re: Chapter Two

Post  Custer Thickett Wed Dec 03, 2014 3:00 pm

Custer thinks, Well, you've done gone and done it now.  He looks down in contemplation, and starts to mumble his story, but quickly becomes more confident and clear.  "I, uh, I'm sorry.  Loved a gal once.  Beautiful as a bright summer day.  She was, ah, murdered by a band of thugs from Esmeltaran not very long ago.  I carry her memory with me, by a fashion."

Custer lets out a long sigh and keeps his focus forward on the road, listening to the sound of the horses' hooves.  After a moment of awkward silence, he continues the story.  His tone turns angry.  "They didn't get away with it.  I sawr to it.  Same way they got her, I got them."

He sighs again, his tone now sad.  "She thinks Roslyn had something to do with it, but family shouldn't do the likes of all that to each other, ya know?  I can understand the motives of me father, but I couldn't forgive me sister if..."  His voice trails off, and he rides in silence.

When the farms come into view, Custer busies himself with his gear, pulling out a small mirror, scissors, and jars of makeup.  As he applies his disguise, he explains, "Don't need em knowing I'm back.  Ya keep that Harper sigil out of sight, ya?"

[Rolling disguise +6]
8 (shit!)

Custer then offers his advice and suggestions as to where to stay for the night and who to talk to first.  "Me thinks most of ya know some history about Esmeltaran, and mayhaps ya've even been there before.  It's a big city with an old story.  See, this land use to be a Halfling Kingdom before some Humans came in and claimed it as their own.  City is mostly human, now, but us Hin have a strong community, and most of the traditions of our kind dominate that of the city.  As such, the Church of Waukeen has a heavy hand in the palace, along with several wealthy families.  Of course, there is a Pasha that claims to govern, but anybody from these parts will tell ya they don't do much more than entertain fancy guest and pester the rest of us."

"The city is rich.  Was the capital of Amn once, afterall.  We've a long history of fancy resorts for those traveling with heavy purses.  The lake and River make it easy for us to get our wares to the coast, and the fertile lands and mild climate means that we have product most of the year.  Also, the gem road opened up a few years back, and that brought a lot of profit to mercantile houses like Thickett."

"The old castle of the highest hill was once the royal palace (map 18), but is now owned by a group of families.  Thickett is one of them.  Most of the others are not local, which has caused Lincoln some grief, and for that reason, the family does not maintain residence there.  He uses his portion of the castle as an office and luxury suite for honored guest.  Agata stayed there, once."
 Custer pauses, Idiot!

He continues, "Uh, the Council of Six still own the main hall of the castle, though.  The city is several thousand souls, but the city guard numbers no more than eight hundred.  The gangs loyal to the Shadows easily double the guards in number, but there is little tension there, as the Cartel long ago demonstrated the power of the coin over the blade, and the Shadows were quick to adapt."

"The Shadows are not exactly members of the Cartel, but they have a working relationship.  See, the Cartel is a group of wealthy mercantile families that pooled their resources together to gain better position for all.  Divided, they were easily bullied by outsiders, but together, they became a force more easily bought off or included than fought off or excluded."

The castle atop the one hill in Esmeltaran comes into view, and Custer knows that he needs to conclude his tale and get to the point.  "Ah, there it is.    Most Taverns and Inns will lead them right to us.  I suggest we either stay at The Golden Sands Inn (map 22), which is owned by the Golden Sands Brewery, or Bashful Esmelda's (map 7), which pays out to both the Cartel and the Shadows.  The Sands is expensive, and we will find nearly the same quality at Esmelda's, but it's loyalties will give us a much quieter, safe, accommodations.  Esmelda's is a quarter the price, and if we go there, we are likely to find better leads on your friends if we aren't faced with a gang of Shadows by supper.  There is also Runhave's Masks (map 4), which is outright run by the Shadows, but we'd like have to burn it down to get out alive by morning.  I wouldn't go there."

"Way I see it, we either try to find out where these fella's stayed if they were in town, or we try to use the document to find the forger, but that's going to raise more than one eyebrow if we just go flashing it around town yelling 'who did this?'  I can talk to some folks I know that are familiar with this kind of work.  I don't right trust em, but might be there is no other way."  Custer takes the document and inspects it for anything he might recognize.

[Rolling investigation to notice anything on the fake writ that might give me a clue.]

Post  Forgeless Kilik Wed Dec 03, 2014 5:15 pm

A halfling city, rife with intrigue... Kilik shook his head as Custer pointed out various buildings, monuments, byways, and businesses best avoided. Things were simpler, under the mountain.

'The Golden Sands' has a nice ring to it, I'd say. An' Harper purses could use some lightening after a long ride. He smiled at Geld.

The customs gate seems a mite quiet...it could be there's somethin' worth lookin' into there. If traffic has been slow of late, there might be some guard who - with a drink or three in 'im - remembers peculiar folk who passed through. An' the ledgers may prove useful, once we can get a better sense o' the timing o' when the writ was forged.

But, aye, I'd say as our first line of inquiry might be some quiet askin' about regardin' where we might come by a document that ain't entirely square. Goin' from inn to inn askin' about travelers when we don't know their number or their manner seems as it might leave us chasin' wind all over Emersel - Emmseral...the city.

Shorjahl nods to Cuss' and Kilik's wisdom. "I've never been here, only passed through, but I've heard enough stories to know not to ruffle any feathers with the Cartel." He stops and squints across the city, his dark brows brooding as normal. "We can use the Sands as a more secure base, branching out from there. Custer, are there any Arcaniums here in the city?"

Custer corrects Kilik, "Es-Mel-Tar-An.  Esmeltaran.  What I mentioned before might work if the folks I know don't pan out.  We could ask after a document of similar quality to pull off another job.  I believe they call the approach doppelganger?"

Custer sighs at Shorjahl, "Eh, well, I don't right know what a divinist is then, but there are plenty of places to look for em.  You could go to Zaraana's place, called Sune's Silk Slipers to ask for one, or you can go to this little shop of trinkets I know of named Davenport's.  Just don't go trying to steal anything.  You might think the place is empty, but he's always in there, watching."

Golden Sands seems right enough by me. I agree with Kilik, the Harpers can foot the bill. I thirst for a stout ale and some food. Little one, where is the blacksmith here? I need to modify my armor and trade out this rope for equal length of chain, he concluded.

Actions:
*Kellar stops at a smithy recommended by Cus. Kellar has his armor reinforced, with caribiner anchor points. He also updates his leggings with a sewn in harness, with four extra caribiner anchor points. He purchases two javelins with barbed ends, and caribiner anchor points on the ends.

AO: Let me know what the cost is for the modifications. Not trying to increase AC, just utility.

As you ride slowly through the streets of Esmeltaran, Custer looks over the writ, looking for any telltale signs of a local forger.

[Custer, Investigate vs. Writ]

The writ is perfectly executed. The seal is well-positioned and there is no hint of mis-placement. And the ink is also well dried, with not a smear. Which means that quick drying Magenta ink was used. Custer doesn’t know that much about forgery, but whoever forged this document was a professional. Likely someone who does it often. So odds are good that they are looking for an established forger, and not an amateur.

You pass by a bubbling pond that drains from between two houses, where a pair of geese paddle along the narrow waterway.

Two guardsmen are walking urgently through the street, past a young urchin who plays a small hand-harp aside an apple cart.

[Shorjahl, Investigation check]

Shorjahl looks for any evidence of a mage college or Arcanum, as you ride between a narrow row of homes with tall iron gates. You crest a stone bridge, pushing past a tall half-orc carrying a dozen or more pelts across his back.

From this vantage, you can see a good deal of the city square, with a beautifully architectured temple of Waukeen, and several shrines of other deities.

An elven woman smiles at Shorjahl as she passes your horse, giving it a tender pat on the nose.

It seems to the mage that an Arcanum is unlikely in this city.

[…]

The Golden Sands sits squatly to the north of the market square, in a crooked laneway bordered by a small smithy and a wide wooden apartment building.

It is an attractive inn, circular in construction, with a pair of ornate wooden doors and a large brass dome atop it.

The sign hanging out the front is of a stylized sand dune, with the Calimshan sun emblazoned in gold atop it.

Their stables are long and nearly empty. A young halfling walks over to you, hailing Geld.

“Oi sir, three gold per horse per day, for the stables.”

Geld nods, handing the youngling a sack of coins. The halfling peers inside, and smiles at the gnome.

“Thank ye, sir.”

[…]

The Golden Sands common room is spacious, with two roaring hearths on the east and west end.

Luxurious sitting sofas are built around the hearths, with a massive wrought-iron chandelier hanging from atop the bronzed dome.

A spiralling iron staircase leads up to a second level, where several tables overlook the common room.

It is evening, and the common room is quiet, but lively. A dozen or so patrons mill about, drinking flagons of ale and chewing on hefty legs of spiced lamb. A halfling minstrel stands in front of the eastern hearth, playing an exotic tune on a double-headed lyre.

The smell of currants and pumpkin perfumes the parlour.

“Welcome, friends.” an attractive woman with dark skin walks over to you, a pitcher of ale in her hand. Her midriff is exposed, silky fabrics draping across her bodice.

“Can I get you a table?”

Geld and Andrianna nod, and the server escorts you up to the second level.

[…]

Geld smiles as you sit and order.

“This was a sound recommendation, Custer.” he says happily. Even Andrianna nods quietly.

“I feel that this will be an appropriate place to stage our investigation from. After dinner, I will order us several rooms from the apartments nearby.”

By now, the flagons and meats have come to the table. They smell peppery and mouthwatering. The dim light of the chandelier glistens upon the foodstuffs, as the haunting melody from the lyre below floats up into the brass rafters.

Andrianna speaks, between mouthfuls of lamb.

“Geld and I will speak with the city guardsmen tomorrow morning. The exchequer let them know we were coming, and they may have information for us.”

She wipes her mouth, draining a tankard and slamming it upon the table.

“And you? You, Custer. You seem to know this area well. It’d be about time you tell us the details of that particular coincidence.”

As she speaks, Custer catches a glimpse of someone that makes his heart stop.

A dark-faced individual walks through the door, stopping to speak with the server, and then walking over to the western hearth.

You cannot see his face, but his oily-black garb and the malice in his step is painfully familiar.

It is the drow - K’Tesh Hunett. An assassin in the employ of the cartel. A duke of the underdark. A man once scorned by Custer - double crossed, framed, and nearly executed at the halflings’ behest.

K’tesh sits down aside a broad-shouldered warrior on a velvety couch. The warrior lights a pipe, and passes it to the drow.

==================

Ok guys. Ktesh has not seen you, but if you leave from the second level he certainly will.

Andrianna’s question hangs pointedly in the air.

It is time to formulate a plan for tomorrow morning, also

Post  Custer Thickett Thu Dec 04, 2014 4:39 pm

As the guardsmen trot near, Custer yells down to them, "Oiy!  Keen eyes, boys!  We sawr Orcs and Goblins in formation not a few hours outside the gate coming east."

...

"Fetch me the Orange, Girl."  Custer winks at the hostess.  He removes his black cloak and drapes it over the back of his chair.  After sitting, he loosens and removes his leather bracers.  When he lifts and sips his Golden Sands Orange Lager, he lets out a long sigh of pleasure.  "Ahhhhhhh, I can taste the currant."

Custer looks at Geld, "Aye, it's a fine place.  No gimmicks, like most 'round here.  This one is lavish cause of the prices.  Will not be cheap, I promise you that, Geld.  This one's owned by the Brewery, though, so it's loyalties are mostly outside the city walls."  Custer helps himself to a leg of lamb.

Custer nods while Andrianna speaks, but when she mentions that the guardsmen knew she was coming, he stops chewing.  Why didn't I think of that?  When she slams down her tankard, he jumps a little.  His eyes then go wide and his face pale as he sees the Drow enter below.

"I, uhh, I, uhh..."  He pauses, then leans over the table and whispers, "Geld, ya like stories, yeah?  I trade a little of this and that when I can, yeah know?  Gotta have coin for things I can't get otherwise.  Foreigners come here for the climate and resorts, but most for hedonistic entertainment of sorts.  They like the rare herbs outlawed most elsewhere.  I did well until one day, the Cartel I knew and loved had an eye out for one of my best clients.  It's not all that important who he or she was, but suffice to say that the assassin knew they bought something special from me.  They dried up my supply and made sure they had the only stuff left in the city.  When I came to them for it, I had to pay a hefty premium, and they tainted it in a way that, well, didn't do my client so well.  You could say it was my first official hit for the Cartel, and I never knew until it was over.  I hated the man that used me like that, and vowed revenge.  I framed him, like he did me, except when I did it, he was almost executed.  I'm still not too clear how he was exonerated, but he is sitting downstairs right now.  Over by the west hearth, smoking a pipe." Custer tilts his head in K'Tesh Hun'Ett's direction.  "No! Don't look, he might see me.  If he doesn't already know I'm here, mayhaps one of you could talk to him to see why he is here, yeah?"

Custer gets up from his chair and kneels beside it.  He quietly moves it opposite of Kellar from K'Tesh's view, then sits down trying to hide in Kellar's profile.

Post  Shorjahl Thu Dec 04, 2014 5:30 pm

Shorjahl levels a look at Cuss and Geld, "Who can we speak to about that orc raiding party? I'd feel better if they were scattered to the wind. I didn't detect any Arcanum's in the city - but perhaps the leader of the militia, or some other faction interested in protecting the city?"

------------------

While waiting for their response, Shorjahl listens to Custer's story. The hin had a murky past, but he'd been a good friend and ally over the last week they'd traveled together. Shorjahl was blind to his own soft spot for the short folk, something about his innate hero complex that was burgeoning up from within him. Before he really knew what he was doing, he took a final bite of potatoes (declining any meat) and a quick swig before standing from the table.

He headed downstairs, a look of humble curiosity upon his weatherworn features, his beard had grown more scruffy and windtorn in the last week. He seemed to have a swifter step, a sharper gaze, the air positively crackled around him in a pleasant and electrifying way. Shorjahl had never felt better in his life.

He approached the dark elf, casually motioning to the seat across from his couch. "Mind if I take a seat?" Regardless of the drow's response, he sits on the edge of the seat, placing both elbows on his widespread knees, hunching and leaning forward conspiratorily. "A man like you doesn't typically come to a place like this-" the arcanist looks up and around quickly "-without a good reason," he gives him a small smile and a knowing nod.

----------------------

Insight for the drow: 9 (heh)
As far as actions, I want to go to whomever is in charge of the city/most likely to help with killing the orcs. Shorjahl's got a bit of delusions of heroism in his veins now, and is eager to see that war party stomped out, more so honestly than the forgery.

Post  Forgeless Kilik Thu Dec 04, 2014 8:33 pm

Shorjahl was down the stairs before Kilik even realized what he was up to, and his face fell as realization set in.

What in the sweet hells is that fool doin'? "Oh, I'll just go poke the drow assassin" says'ee. An' they wonder why humans don't live as long as sensible folk...

He looks around the table at the others, whispering quickly. Keep yer eyes lively; if things go sharp-ish downstairs, there's an ol' dwarf trick that might do us some good. Someone stand up an' shout 'She's me wife, ye bastard!', an' then everyone find someone to knock on the head, then grab the wizard an' run for the door. If all goes right, there's enough of a row for us to get away in the mess of it. An' if all goes wrong, ye usually jus' end up spendin' a night or two in jail. Better 'an a knife in yer belly.

This doesn't seem the kind o' place much given to a good ol' fashioned dwarf brawl, but we can always see what kind o' spirit they have in 'em hereabouts...

Post  Osvald Hale Thu Dec 04, 2014 10:58 pm

Osvald sighed heavily and watched Shorjahl worriedly as the man sat down beside the drow.

He met Geld's pale expression across the table with a grin, and leaned in close to Cuss.

"Cuss, if things go sideways, just duck out of here to our room. No need someone unsavoury seeing your face. We'll get Shorjahl out of there if need be."

Draining his flagon, Osvald rises.

"...And here I was, all ready to get a good drunk going." He says, flashing another devilish grin, before stepping away. After a few steps the huntsman begins wobbling slightly, feigning a (well practiced) drunken gait. He says a few slurred words of gibberish to a passing bar maid and then slumps into a seat at a small vacant table opposite the others, putting Shorjahl and the drow between them.

Osvald begings quietly singing a garbled drinking song while keeping an eye on the couch, nursing his empty cup.

'I wonder if I'll ever enter a new city without having someone try to kill me within the day?' He wondered idly, tense and ready for action.

====

Osvald will move to a new table across the room for a better position on the action if need be, feigning drunkenness to avoid potential suspicion.

Post  Kellar Fri Dec 05, 2014 3:17 am

Figures, have fun with the drow Shorjahl, chuckled Kellar. I can't tell if its stupidity or bravery that is going to get us killed, he continued. Kellar kept an eye on Shorjahl's approach and eventual sitdown near the drow.

Kellar fed some bits of lamb to Orbaugh. He ate and drank and measured the room about them. Not much distance to cover to come to his aid at any rate.

Orbaugh, can you do me a favor and get close to Shorjahl and relay what they are saying? It may help keep Shorjahl alive.

With that, Orbaugh hopped down from the table and slinked from step to step, table to table until he eas near Shorjahl, listening intently.

I'm with you Master Dwarf, a distraction may be needed if things go south in a hurry, Kellar said. Adrianna, if the opportunity for distraction arises, use your charm while following me down the steps. We could use your abrasiveness, more beligerent the better, smirked Kellar.

Post  Ao Fri Dec 05, 2014 12:33 pm

“…it will be over in a matter of hours.”

The drow stops speaking as Shorjahl sits down, turning away from his warrior companion.

He glowers at Shorjahl through a plume of smoke, levelling his gaze as the wizard speaks.

You can see that the warrior sitting aside him is incredulous. A wry grin crosses the man’s mouth, as he watches the drow lean forward and speak in a hushed tone.

“And who might you be, manling?”

The drow’s voice is high-pitched and soft, almost female. As he looks at you, his black flesh drowns all the reflective torchlight from the brazier above. Only his lacquered eyes belay a glisten.

“You must be very brave, or very stupid, to interrupt our private conversation.”

[…]

Andrianna looks down into the common room, standing up quickly.

Geld grabs her wrist.

“No, don’t. We cannot make a scene.”

She wrestles her arm from him and walks toward the staircase.

Geld rubs his temples, and looks to Custer and Kellar.

“I don’t know what your friends are attempting. But it hardly commands the subtlety required here.”

[…]

[Shorjahl, Insight results:]

Shorjahl can tell that the warrior defers to the drow. Perhaps he is a hireling, or a trusted mercenary. But it is clear that the black-skinned elf is in control of the situation here. The wizard can also tell that he interrupted a very private conversation.

“You must not know me, manling. This is my city. You sit here because I allow it to be so.”

The drow takes a drag on his pipe, and leans back.

The server walks past you, very purposefully looking in a different direction.

“I don’t know who you are, or who you work for. And you look very strong! Oh yes, the gods have gifted you with a talent for the arcane, it is apparent. I am certain you will be missed.”

The warrior smiles at the drows statement, as the dark elf turns away from Shorjahl.

Before you can respond, a female voice cuts the threatening silence.

“Master drow.” says Andrianna, walking up alongside Shorjahl.

Her voice is respectful. It is the first time you’ve heard that tone.

“Forgive my associate. He is brazen, and mis-spoke. I will assume his penance.”

And now, she makes a strange gesture to him, and discretely rolls up her sleeve to reveal a tattoo, of a mask with a dagger through it.

He looks at the tattoo for a moment, and then waves her away.

“Fine, fine. Off with you.”

Andrianna grabs you by the sleeve, and escorts you outside.

[…]

Geld shepherds the rest of you outside, discretely.

You round the corner of the stables just in time to see Andrianna shouting in a furious hiss at Shorjahl.

The stable-boy is eavesdropping, but Andrianna shoots him a glare and he goes scampering off down the street.

“Are you mad, wizard? What was your game? To get yourself killed, and us exposed? That’s an assassin of the Shadow Thieves, you bloody fool. They slit throats for breakfast, and they hunt for sport. If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were working for them. But you’re clearly not smart enough for their ranks.”

She is hyperventilating now.

“Geld, come on.”

The gnome looks on, saying nothing.

“These fools will get us killed. Stay wherever you please, you band of idiot mercenaries. But be it far away from us. Find the forger, or do not, but do it of your own volition.”

She turns and begins stalking away.

Geld stares helplessly after her.

“That was unwise, wizard. And Andrianna is right. By all rights you’ve complicated our position here. We will stay at Esmelda’s, and mount our investigation from there. If you find anything, we’ll be there.”

Geld looks at you disapprovingly. Almost sadly. But he turns on his heel and jogs after Andrianna.

You stand in the quiet street of the sands. Two drunks walk out the front door, stumbling past you.

The harpers round the corner, and are out of sight.

====================

Ok guys. I know I moved that along quickly, and I made some decisions for you, but Andrianna’s actions forced things along and I didn’t want us to languish in too much back-n-forth conversation with just one party member for too long.

So, this is how the chips have fallen, given Shorjahl’s quick actions.

The sharp tone of the harpers left no room for interjection. If you really want to follow-up with them before continuing onward, then you can go to Esmelda’s in the morning.

Otherwise, your rooms are paid for at the Sands for this evening.

Let me know how you plan to proceed tonight, and in the morning.

Post  Shorjahl Fri Dec 05, 2014 12:56 pm

The arcanist's face is flush with anger and embarrassment. He'd opened his mouth multiple times to speak, only to be shouted back down by the Harper and the disapproving looks of his comrades. He clenched his jaw down tight, crossing his arms and leaning against the post of the Sands outside, staring pointedly at the ground.

After they leave, he looks somewhat beseechingly to Cuss, "I went and talked with him. I didn't realize there were those here that were off limits." He uncrosses his arms and stares after Adrianna. "However, the Drow said that something will be 'over in a matter of hours' to his warrior friend. He also implied that I would be killed," Shorjahl smiles feebly, then runs his hand through his beard and thick dark hair.

"I'll understand if you are upset with me, but something didn't feel right with the Harpers anyway. Adrianna had some nature of tattoo on her wrist that appeared to placate the assassin. Any ideas?" He looks at Cuss again, deferring to his expertise. Some of Shorjahl's spritely confidence had been deflated, his cheeks now looked rather hollow and his eyes grim.

Post  Custer Thickett Fri Dec 05, 2014 2:03 pm

Custer sighs and slowly lowers his head onto the table when Adrianna's trip downstairs places her at the hearth.  He keeps his thoughts to himself, Miss high and mighty doesn't have the sense the Gods gave a goose.  K'Tesh does not forget a face.  Mayhaps I can figure a way for this to work out in our favor.  Agata does not lend advice.

When Geld directs the team outside, Custer is careful to shadow Kellar's stride.  He nods and winks at the hostess, whispering, "We'll be back in a moment."

Custer burst out into laughter once outside and in view of Adrianna's mood.  He doubles over and uses one hand to brace himself against the wall as his body shutters with his cackle.  He struggles to catch his breath as Geld tells Shorjahl that he is heading to Bashful Esmelda's.  He sucks in air as he tries to respond, "Better hurry, Gnome...  Your leash is going to pull.. Your neck if she... gets much farther away...  Esmelda's is more a place of her liking anyhow."

Custer winks at Shorjahl and then wipes tears from each eye in turn.  "Me thinks she's really the one in charge.  To the pits with those Harpers, anyway.  Your approach was fine.  If it were her idea, we'd be a step closer to our goal rather than standing out here while our food goes cold in there.  What did the tatoo look like?"

[I'd rather assist Shorjahl on a roll to recognize than roll myself.]

"Over in an hour?  Meh, he's always involved in some plot or another.  I wouldn't put too much thought into it."  Custer says as he thinks, What's that cursed bastard into?  Custer sighs as he puts his bracers back on, and then says, "Well, I'll not be seeking another bed or brew when these are paid for just because some old enemy is a sitting on the couch.  I've faced him before, after-all.  Come with me, fellas.  If this is going to work, I'll need you with me.  No matter what I say, don't go interrupting me like she did him.  That good for nothing frog eating sewer drinking swamp smelling daughter of a two copper whore."

Without further pause, in Adrianna's fashion, Custer pivots on his heels and strides into the Sands and straight over to the couch where K'Tesh sits.  Hopefully with his companions arraying behind him, Custer announces himself, "K'Tesh, old friend, might be my luck or yours that brought us together again under this beautiful brass dome.  You'll have to forgive the scene my agent made earlier, but it was necessary to get that Harper out of here."  Custer shows his hands with open palms, a gesture of parlay.  "She has an eye on ya, and I know why.  Mayhaps we can make another fair trade of sorts."  Custer winks, slowly reaches into his pocket, and produces the forged write.  He unfurls it for K'Tesh to see while watching his reactions closely, "This work is from one of yours, yes no?"

[Rolling Persuasion +6 to convince K'Tesh that the Harpers are onto him for something, and that Custer can somehow help. +6]
