Re: Chapter Two
Custer stares hard into Andrianna, unmoving as he addresses the Harpers, "We head north to me family's estate. I must be seeing to the safety of me sister, and we can rally support there. Mayhaps some of me family guards or allies will be there to join us in our push against these foes. We can also be stowing some of our heavier gear there before we make our way to the front." Custer turns his stare to Geld, "We know what they took from the vault, we know who took it, and where they went. Stay alive through this iffen ya want to find out."
Cuss reaches in his gear and pulls out another vial of glowing blue liquid. He slips off the cork, downs it in one gulp, wipes his mouth, and then stows the empty vial back in his bag. He turns to Shorjahl, "There's no time to fetch Kilik. Let's move, what say ya?" Cuss then turns and begins hustling towards his father's home to the northeast.

Re: Chapter Two
Kellar picks up his stride as he moves with the group. Orbaugh glides down awkwardly into Kellar's arms. He pops the pseudodragon onto his shoulder and then clicks two chain lengths together, one on the belt and one on a javelin.
Little one, I know you're worried for your sister, but she may have less of a chance to be alive if we don't confront the disaster first. Orbaugh tells me there's a large fire, he said as the group kept moving.
The other option is we run to your family's estate and ditch these two with your sister until we get back, Kellar says as he points at Adrianna and Geld. What do you say, we haven't much time, Kellar said eagerly.
Actions:
Kellar is for going toward the flame first, instead of the estate, but he will bend to Cuss' intentions if he makes it as quick as possible. The fire could consume all and it would be for nothing.

Re: Chapter Two
"They're both in the same direction, no? Let's head north, and see to it that those that can be helped are helped." Shorjahl would stride quickly forward, the dark demeanor he held in Elderro's now replaced with that of a worried kind of exasperation, slowly hardening into battle preparedness.
"Hopefully we'll be able to find master Kilik later, but this is the most pressing matter. Geld and Andrianna, you'll move with us, as there's much we have to discuss yet." His tone left no room for dispute.

Go NE. Shorjahl is pretty much following those who care most. In such wide scale issues, he wants to be in the heart of the action, but he also doesn't want to get his friends killed.

Re: Chapter Two
Cuss responds to Kellar between heavy breaths as his little feet struggle to keep up with the Humans' longer strides. The pack on his back felt twice as heavy as it ever had been. "Aye... We... Can... Leave... Them... There..." Cuss takes several seconds to regain enough breath for another sentence. "Geld... said... he... can't... fight... any... how..."

Re: Chapter Two
Black smoke swirls around you as you run through the panicked streets of Esmeltaran.
Townsfolk charge past you, emerging from the haze and then disappearing behind you, as you charge after the halfling toward the Thickett Estate.
A wagon trundles past, horses charging with fear in their eyes. On the back, a cloaked figure climbs upon the cabin, a sword in his hands.
The driver stares back in terror, his man-at-arms jumping atop the wagon and skewering the interloper. The corpse falls to the ground, the wagon disappearing into the smoke.
Looking at the assailant’s face, you can see he is a half-orc. A pendant hangs about his neck. It looks like a golden, triangular arcane rune.
Geld stares down at the body, and looks to Andrianna.
“I’ve not seen that sigil before.” he says, a quiver of worry in his voice.
She nods, and continues after Custer.
[…]
You find yourselves before an enormous manse, nestled in to the side of the highest hill in Esmeltaran. This is Custer’s home, the Thickett Estate.
Tall, iron gates bar the front courtyard. Before them, two men-at-arms stand guard, looking down at the panoramic view of the north-eastern gate of Esmeltaran.
[…]
The north-eastern gate is burning.
The fire that devours it is undoubtedly magical. It burns brightly, with nothing but the stony walls for fuel. Alchemist’s fire - the most deadly variety.
An army of at least two-hundred has broken through the gatehouse, and tall, violent flames rise in perpetuity into the night sky. From this distance (perhaps, half a mile), you cannot tell the race or disposition of the assailants.
In their midst, however, is a towering ogre that trundles through the front lines flailing a tree-sized club. Arrows stream up at the beast, and it howls in anger as men chop at its feet.
The ogre may fall soon. But, it is clear, that the Esmeltaranian militia is having a hard time containing the onslaught.
Still…
[Kellar, passive military knowledge]
A force of 200, regardless of their level of training, attacking a fortified city of this size, is a fool’s errand. Even now, militia from the rest of the city streams to contain the assault.
This rogue warband may have had the element of surprise, but in short order they will be contained by the local military.
Unless…
Keller looks to the south-west, where a blood-curdling sight is unfolding.
For at the south-western gate, where the denizens of Esmeltaran flee in earnest even now, the same fire is rising into the sky.
“By the gods…” whispers Andrianna.
“The attack is from both sides.”
She stares, paralyzed, as fire rises up into the night over the great city.
Geld is also stunned.
“How has no scout, road warden, or farmer of the countryside not forewarned the city of such a force? This…this is a most troubling question…”
[…]
The two guardsmen before the Thickett manor stare down at Custer as he approaches.
You recognize them as Erlen and Savvus, house mercantile guards.
“Lord Custer!” they shout at you through the din and the smoke. They run toward you, clearly relieved to see a friendly face.
“What a night of evil and sin, even in Esmeltaran.” begins Erlen.
“So good to see you, my lord! Your lord father has already fled with lady Rosalynn, to Trader’s Glory.”
Trader’s Glory is Lincoln Thickett’s signature ship, a four-masted pleasure schooner.
“He bade us stay here and protect the estate from looters and brigands. There were fourteen more of us stationed. But, the rest of them fled as soon as the assailants broke through the gates. What are you orders, Lord Thickett?”
Andrianna and Geld look at Custer, their mouths agape.
"Lord Thickett?" they say together, dumbfounded.
=======================
Ok guys, you stand before the Thickett estate. If you feel like you’d like to describe it, Custer, feel free.
The two guardsmen clearly do not want to be here.
Also, there appears to be another group of assailants at the south-western gate. It seems as if Esmeltaran has become sandwiched between two substantial attacking forces.
And, lincoln thickett has apparently fled to his bateau, it seems. Let me know where you’re going.

Re: Chapter Two
Custer places his right hand on the stone wall next to the gate and his left on his knee as he leans and catches his breath. He starts to speak, but then starts to choke. He holds up his left hand pointing a single finger to the sky as a gesture to give him a moment, and then uses it to cover his mouth as he coughs. He spits on the ground as he wipes the hand on his dark cloak, then addresses the guards. "Came as quick as I could, fellas..." Cuss still breathes hard, and he spits again before continuing. "Bag's too damned heavy even packed the mountain way..." Cuss attempts to bolster his men's courage. "Twelve ran, yet here you two stand, ready to guard me father's home against that army." Cuss takes another deep breath. "Erlen, Savvus, I commend ya bravery, and shall we be surviving the night, I'll see to it ya rewarded as fourteen." Cuss winks and pushes off the wall. "Open the gate. We need to stow our gear and our honored guest. Then we aim to be killing some Orcs and mayhaps an Ogre or two, ya?"
As Savvus pulls the gate open and the metal groans and squeaks on its hinges. Custer takes the brief moment to bathe in the sight of the home where he had so many memories. The house had been a home to Thicketts for many generations, and as such, the stone foundations were old and the grounds small by the standards of Amn's wealthy. His father had improved upon the structure several times over the years, and what had once been a single story stone cottage was now a narrow five story mansion only slightly more fit to his station. Compared to Elderro's, the grounds and architecture were modest and more akin to the bunkhouses of the common folk than the lavish manors, resorts, and inns of Faerun's rich. Lincoln Thickett followed a creed of investing his wealth in the pursuit of power rather than hording it for show or for some thief to enjoy the spoils of his labor. His personal purchases always had purpose, such as the family's new share of the old royal palace, Badger's Borrow, Donal's Smithy, or Trader's Glory. Still, Custer was very fond of the place where he spent his childhood. It'll be such a shame should I have to watch you burn tonight.
Once the gate is open, Custer hurries inside while removing his pack from his back. As he rounds the house for the entrance to the lowest level of the house, the one made of the old original stones, he turns his head and speaks to the group of tactics. "Iffen we can push through those at this gate, might be enough to rally the militia to finish the job. Mayhaps then we can turn South outside the walls and try to hit the those attacking that gate in the rear. If Waukeen's luck be with us, might be we can catch their leadership poorly guarded somewhere out there. Iffen ya want to head straight for the South gate, might be we'd make the best time if we climbed and ran along the walls to get there. The streets looked a mighty mess 'tween here and there, ya?"
Custer opens the door and slings his pack in a corner once inside. He then uses his hands to turn his head and crack his neck, then squeezes his shoulders and rotates to pop his back. Several cracks echo on the smooth stone inside. Cuss then fetches his shortbow and quiver, his case of crossbow bolts, K'Tesh's hand crossbow, a vial of a dull green liquid, and three ceramic jars. He lays them on the table in the center of the room and unfastens his cloak. He tosses it over the rest of his gear in the corner. Cuss removes one of the crossbows from his left hip holster, and cocks the legs in place. He holds it up, "I shant be needing this one out there, does anybody want to carry it? Don't be losing it, it weren't cheap." Cuss then folds K'Tesh's bow and stows it snug on his hip. It surprisingly fit quite well. Cuss turns to the three ceramic jars and opens them. A very strong, dank, acrid odor fills the room as he mixes the contents into an empty vial and corks it. He screws the lids back on the jars, and then starts shaking the vial as he coughs and spits. "Oiy, I hope it kills half as well as it fouls me nose and throat. Aiy, that burns."
[Mixing vial of poison, which should allow me to coat up to three arrows or bolts.]
Cuss pulls the two empty healing potion vials out of his belt pouch, and tosses them on the table with the jars. He then places the vial of acid and vial of poison in their place, snug aside his gold and the two other healing potions he swiped off K'Tesh. He then throws the quiver and crossbow bolt case over his back, then checks the rapier on his hip. Settled that he was well geared and prepared for battle, Cuss turns his attention to Erlen and Savvus. "Boys, I know me father gave ya orders to guard the estate, but the house will do us little good should the whole city fall and burn around it, ya? Come with us. We are going to push those fookers back out the gate one shot and slash at a time, and fight till dawn if that's what it'll take. I promise ya'll be safer with us in the fray than up here trying to guard the house just the two of ya should their attack get this far." Cuss picks up and strings his shortbow, then mimics Kilik's voice, "What say yer?"
[Rolling persuasion +6. Rolling twice for possible advantage or assist.]
18 or 24
To Geld and Andrianna, "Are ya staying here, or are ya going to stand and fight with us out there?"
If they are staying, "There is a balcony on the third level that faces the gate, and one on the fourth that faces the hill. Ya can fire to the street from either one. Don't go rifling through any of my family's things iffen ya want me be telling ya who took what from that vault. I promise ya me father had little if anything to do with it."
If Erlen and Savvus are coming along, Cuss will give then orders as the groups heads back out to the street. "Fellas, I want ya stay close to me blue friend with the pet dragon. His name be Kellar, and he's more experienced in battle than most. Don't just go running into a horde or Orcs, neither. We going to have to outsmart em to beat em. That ain't asking much, really. If ya get separated, fall in with the militia or rally back here at the house. Oh, and if ya see me in trouble, save me, ya?" Cuss laughs.
If they aren't coming, "Well, then keep these two out of trouble and out of me father's belonging's, ya?"

Re: Chapter Two
Erlen and Savvus stare down at the halfling, and then look to one another.
"I never knew you were such a fighter, Lord Custer." says Savvus, in surprise.
"I'm not sure how much we can do against an army, but we'd be honored to lend our swords."
Hot wind blows across your faces from the fire raging at the north-east gates.
Andrianna and Geld stand upright. The gnome, his face still contorted in shock, begins speaking,
"Lord Thickett?" he says, dumbfounded. "You're the son of that...-"
Andrianna cuts him off.
"It doesn't matter, Geld." she says curtly.
"We've a city on fire, and it smolders all the more with every passing minute. We'll sort out our details after we figure out what in the hells happened to Esmeltaran tonight."
She turns to the rest of you, and nods.
"We're with you. Lead the way."
=========================
Ok guys, Esmeltaran burns and I need a concise idea of where you want to go.
In broad strokes, you can head down towards the northeastern gate to see the situation down there.
Or, the southwestern gate, though that'll require heading through the city. Unless you take the walls, like Custer suggested - probably not a bad one, yeah?
As well, there's the port, where Lincoln Thickett is leaving on Trader's Glory
Also, there's anywhere else you think might be useful/vulnerable to head to
Savvus and Erlen are joining the party, alongside Andrianna and Geld. That makes...8 of you.
I propose that Custer be responsible for Savvus and Erlen, from a combat perspective. Let me know if that works for you, Cuss. I'll have their stats up by this evening. Just to be clear: feel free to roleplay each of them a little bit, as you'd like. I'll add a few roleplaying tips to each of their stat blocks in the lair. I'll need you to consult with me before you make them do anything drastic. Also, this isn't necessary - obviously don't let it hamper your ability to RP your own character. Use them as an accessory.
If someone else (Kellar? Shorj? Osvald?) wants to control one of them, for fun, that's fine. Let us know and we'll give you the reigns for Erlen.
Thanks
EXP: +20 to Custer, Kellar, Shorjahl and Osvald. Because I fucked up rotation by missing fridays post. So yeah See you monday.

Re: Chapter Two
Custer returns Geld's stare with a brief shocked look of his own, My, my, how the tables have turned. He nods to Andrianna, "Me lady, ya honor me. Thank ya." He turns back to Geld, and points at him as he speaks, "For once, she's got the better of it. Hold ya tongue in me house. Hold it the rest of the night, unless ya be burning, and mayhaps I'll let ya keep it, no?" Cuss smiles and winks at the taller Harper, then turns for the door. He drops his head in a shallow bow as he holds it open for the rest, "Shall we, then?"
As Erlen passes Custer, he bows in kind. He turns to the side and pauses his stride on the other side of the door. "My Lord, I'm with you, but... I... I'd be of better use with me bow than with me sword." Just as he finishes talking, Saavus passes through the door, also bowing, then slightly pushing at Saavus with his shield. "Who are you to be questioning the orders of our brave little Lord?" Custer releases the door, letting it swing in front of Geld's stride, so that he can step between them. "Boys, it was no disrespect to me. Ya right, Erlen. Against such a force, attacks at range will be most effective unless ya have the quick wrist of me friend Saavus here. Stick with my friend that has the pretty face. His name's Lord Hale, and he is a solid shot. Just don't go getting in his way, now, ya hear?" Erlen bows, somewhat meekly, as Saavus had embarrassed him. "Aye, my Lord." Saavus opens his mouth, but in Andrianna's fashion, Custer cuts him off. "Do ya know how silly ya look with that shield and such tiny blade?" Saavus cuts his eyes to Custer, and his look flashes of anger, then the sorrow of a scolded child. Custer's stern look turns to a beaming smile, and together, they burst out laughing as two drunken friends leaving Esmelda's with their trouser's hanging loose. A curious scene with the backdrop of a city burning and screaming in horror.
When Custer makes the iron gate, he ask Saavus, "Spect me father took the wagons and steeds then, ya?" "Aye, my lord. There be a wagon across the street at Caden's place, but no steeds there either, I fear." Cuss smiles and heads across the street, finding the wagon as promised, sitting in the alley beside the house. He looks up at the bench, and spots a hand break. Perfect! He then lifts the tongue and struggles to pull the wagon into the street. Saavus and Erlen rush to help him, and together, they get the wagon into the road and pointed down hill. Cuss and Saavus lift the tongue upright, so as to steer the wagon from the bench, as Erlen climbs into the back and strings his bow. Cuss jumps up on the bench, and test swinging the tongue to make sure it steers the front wheels, then nods to Saavus. "Might be ya'll need help to steer it, ya? Just be careful on the break iffen we get to moving too fast. Don't want it to end up like the last time I took me father's wagon down the hill." Saavus barks a short laugh, "Aye, I'll never forget that. It was one of the first times I heard ya laugh louder than your father could scream in anger." He nods downhill, "When you flipped it over down there, wood flew in all directions. I thought you were dead for sure." Cuss nocks an arrow and looks down to the group, "What are ya waiting for? Give us a push and climb on!"
=====
Cuss, Saavus, and Erlen are preparing to ride a wagon down the hill to get into the fight with haste.

Re: Chapter Two
Kellar makes it to the Manor along with the others and drops Orbaugh down to the ground. Looks like we have a choice here, Orbaugh. Kellar takes a moment to draw his lance and check the caribiners attached to the javelin on his back. I think I'm ready, these two will be fine, just keep your distance. Everyone fights, no one quits, Kellar said loudly. We should make our way where the large enemies are, topple those things and we'll be able to clear up along the outside wall of the city, Kellar suggested. Thickett Manor should be our rally point, it's central to both areas that are being attacked. I suggest that the wounded be brought here, he said.
As we travel and see the city guard, announce it loudly, let them know that Thickett Manor is the rally point for the city guard and the wounded. What say you Little One, ready for the Thickett's to be the benefactor of the city of Esmelteran, questioned Kellar. Kellar sees Custer load up the wagon. We'll need to steer for the legs of the ogre, knock that bastard flat and we'll be able to neutralize it and fight our way through the gate and follow the wall and flank that other force, suggested Kellar.
Erlen, when you run out of arrows, head back here and attempt to maintain order and help the city guard defend this point against the attackers, Kellar commanded, while looking toward Custer for approval.
Adrianna, once we clear out the enemy near the ogre, take the archers through town and have them loose arrows at the other point of attack. Count to five, and then shout "Ixen!" Make sure it's loud, I'll be able to hear it. Shout "Wielg," if you fall back to Thickett Manor. Again, get the word to the wounded that can walk, to get to Thickett Manor, and leave the dead, he said coldly.
Kellar nods to Andrianna and stands on the side of the wagon and uses the foothold and hangs from the side of it, ready to barrel down the hill toward danger!
Actions:
Kellar will ride with Custer and the others toward the ogre (that's my vote!), and then circle outside the gate and flank the other attack force. Kellar directs Andrianna to take the archers back through town after that side is cleared up and command the archers.
Kellar establishes Thickett Manor as a rally point for the city guard/army (if everyone agrees).

Custer nods at Kellar's directions, adding, "Aye, me thinks ya got it right. I only worry that without Kilik or some other specialist, walking up the hill would do the wounded little good. Mayhaps the Golden Lady's Luck will bring him back here. Iffen we have to make a final stand, it should be at the Old Royal Palace. The Walls are strong and it sits at the pinnacle of the highest hill. Me thinks the militia would already be prepared for just that, should it come to it."
When Kellar directs Andrianna on the archers, Cuss suggest, "If the streets are still too clogged to make way, look to the walls and the roofs. If any archers run out of missiles from atop a roof, throw the slate shingles. They've fallen loose and killed a'fore. May the Gods be with us, and iffen they aren't, well, lets give them a good show anyhow!"
As the wagons starts to roll down hill, Custer suggest, "Might be some of ya will want to be jumping off, and tucking a roll before we get to the Ogre, ya? Me thinks his tree will get to us long 'fore the wagon gets to him. Lets send these bastards to the hell they belong in!" Cuss begins hooping and hollering as loud as he can, making for an impressive Halfling battle cry. He begins loosing arrows at the Ogre as soon as he is in range, shouting between each volley.
====
When the wagon gets close, Cuss will jump from it and roll, then take up position fifty yards from the front, loosing arrows. If he sees arrows in a quiver of a fallen solider, he will grab them as he pats them on the shoulder.

Shorjahl knows he's no soldier, and has never been involved in any combat of such scale. It was only a few days ago that he vomited from killing his first kobold.
And now, here he was, riding in the back of a wagon, pushing it forward with a burst of arcane energy, in order to make his way into the fray against orcs and evil men. He concentrated on the intricate spellforms, shapes, and conjurations he would need to call upon in the battle, thinking of the damage his new powers can wreak upon clustered groups of enemies.
"I'm ready." Is all he says, his face stern and the color red upon his cheeks, his eyes darkly hooded and glimmering.
------------------
Will assist with the wagon. As soon as we are within range of 60', I will unleash some nasty spells on big groups of enemies. Let me know.

Re: Chapter Two
The wagon trundles down the hill, the fellowship clinging to its sides as Shorjahl controls its descent with the arcane.
Heat begins to wash across your flesh as you descend the ridge, whipping past elegant manors and cobbled fences, as smoke creeps through the air.
Ashes rain down from the sky. It is becoming harder to breathe as you near the roadway that leads down to the northeast gate…
[…]
The wagon slows at the bottom, still quite a ways from the fighting.
Ahead of you, perhaps 500 feet, is a flaming graveyard of immolated carriages and trade-stands. Beyond them, the skirmish appears to be raging.
Andrianna and Geld dismount the wagon, alongside the two guardsmen.
You lead the charge on foot.
[…]
The skirmish beyond the burning carriages is in the market square, where the assailants push the militia beyond the burning gate.
Nearly 200 cloaked marauders trample over corpses of merchant and militia alike, meeting a resistance of Esmeltaranian swordsmen and pikemen, all afoot.
Most of them wear only half their armor.
Looking over the combat, it is clear that Esmeltaran’s militia was ill-equipped for this attack. They fight in loose formations, spread out over 500 feet of wall.
Isolated pockets of melee are beginning to turn in the favour of the assailants. Custer believes that reinforcements from the palace cannot be far behind…
Or could not, before the southwestern gate was attacked. Waukeen knows how many assailants charged that gate…
The ogre stands tall still, a small cadre of archers firing upon it from atop two roofs in the market square; above an inn, and above a fishmonger guild house.
Nine cloaked figures fight alongside the ogre, and from this distance you can see that most of them are orcs.
They are currently entangled against a dozen militia-men.
[…]
As you approach the market square, through the fiery haze you can see a tall building on the north-east corner.
A vacant alleyway runs between two leaning warehouses, giving you a clear view of the entryway.
The tall building is the gatehouse. And, outside of it, four cloaked assailants are guarding its doorway. Looking at the flaming gate, the wood has all but disintegrated. However, the portcullis has not been engaged, and stands wide open, allowing more assailants to pour through and aid the attack.
Andrianna points down the alleyway,
“The gatehouse! We may be able to lower the portcullis from within…”
Geld frowns, looking at the sentries.
“Might be unwise for us to charge past the enemy lines, and seal ourselves in the gatehouse before dealing with some of these forward forces."
==================
Ok guys, there are several avenues available here. If you want to leave the city walls and circle around to flank, you would have to go out through the gate, which is currently swarmed by assailants and fire.
The portcullis can perhaps be closed through the gatehouse, if you want to brave that avenue and storm it.
Or, of course, you could try and assist with the ogre.
Let me know which direction you’re going, and how you approach. No attack rolls yet, until I know who you’re attacking or what you plan on doing.
Also, if you don’t like the situation here, of course you’re free to go elsewhere.

Re: Chapter Two
Osvald pulls his cloak up over his mouth and nose against the searing smoke billowing in great whorls from the burning city.
Point through the melee ahead he calls out, "Andrianna is right, we should cut off the attackers reinforcements as soon as possible, give the city guard a chance to regroup. Every minute we waste here could see another dozen invaders pour through that gate." He looks about, frowning at the failing state of the scattered melees. The rangers hooded eyes flicker from light to dark in the wild firelight.
"Shorjahl, Can you clear us a path? If we move quickly, I'm confident we can punch a hole through to the Gatehouse. From there we can mount a proper defence, and Kellar can direct the city guard that remains. Scattered like this there's little hope..."
Osvald unslings his bow and nocks an arrow, ready to sprint forward.
"Lets form up tight. Kellar and Savvus up front to give Shorjahl some breathing room. The rest of us will follow close behind, keep the path behind us covered, and try to give our vanguard some ranged support. We do this hard and fast, Hammer against the Anvil, and we'll make it."
The ranger grits his teeth and waits, ready to rush forward, to victory or oblivion.
====
Osvald wants to direct all our efforts in one focused strike through the crowd to the gatehouse, seal the breech and from there mount a proper defence, however, He will submit to a better suggestion from Kellars military experience or Cuss's local knowledge.

Re: Chapter Two
The arcanist nods grimly at Osvald. "I'll clear us a path." He steps forward, jogging lightly, his leather robes and craftsman's leathers creaking slightly as he runs. They had been heavily cleaned and mended many times by the wizard's fine care and use of subtle arcane energies, but they were beginning to show the signs of wear and tear of ten years on the road - the last two weeks of which had been especially harsh.
As he clenched his hands into fists, his bracer began to chime and glow familiarly to his comrades. "Stay to my left and right, as this much force is difficult for me to aim with any precision." He looks to his comrades, waiting for their acknowledgement, then begins accelerating his pace, his bracered hand clenched firmly, while his left hand rests loosely in front of his waist as he jogs.
As soon as the first group of enemies approaches the party, Shorjahl waits until the last possible moment, and with a sudden explosive burst of energy - the air boiling and twisting as if seen through a heat wave - reaches his hand forward and blasts any who stand in his way.
--------------------------
I will cast up to two uses of Burning Hands to clear us a path to the gatehouse. Shorjahl will wait until he can maximize the amount of baddies he can blast away, even if it equates a higher chance of danger to himself.
Burning Hands is a 15' cone, origin me, 3d6 damage, Dex Save DC 13, save=half damage.
I will roll two saves and two sets of damage. If you need to roll more or want me to roll more let me know.
Save 1 for bad guys: 5
Damage 1 for BH: 12
Save 2 for bad guys: 13
Damage 1 for BH: 15/2 = 7 (the roll itself beats my DC, so unless they take penalties to their saves they take half)

"I'm with ya, Geld, but we've little time and much to lose. We must be making the gate house and we must also be rallying the militia, lest we've no anvil nor hammer. Look at em, spread out, poorly geared, and with no leadership. Iffen we can't bring order to the ranks right now, then this charge will be folly indeed. Help me bring em together." Custer will charge forward behind Saavus, abreast Erlen and Osvald, loosing arrows at any close targets, all while calling out to the militia and encouraging the others to do the same.
"Over eight hundred years since we've fallen, and we'll not be fallin tonight! Form up, boys! Form up! Charge right! Right! Charge right! We take command of this field from the right! Form up! Take and hold the gatehouse, to the right! With us! With us!"

FORM UP! PIKEMEN, IN FRONT OF THE ARCHERS! SWORDS FALL BACK BEHIND THE PIKES, RALLY TO US! Kellar yelled at the top of his lungs.
Swords! Two blades for every one enemy! Legs and Necks! Archers! Follow Lord Hale, help him thin their number! he commanded!
Kellar sees the flames pour out from Shorjahl into the enemy, such an intense heat. The enemy is sure to cook in their armor...
Lord Hale, the pikemen and I will charge after the count of five, he relayed.
Little One, command the swords to follow, the enemy will collapse in around us after the charge, keep us clear, he said to Custer.
Actions:
Kellar will lead the pikemen in a charge after Shorjahl's blast takes effect.
Otherwise Kellar will maintain a rally along with Custer, he will roll to aid him in his attempt to rouse the militia to unite!
Swords! Two blades for every one enemy! Legs and Necks! Archers! Follow Lord Hale, help him thin their number! he commanded!

Re: Chapter Two
Custer and Kellar shout over the din. The heat begins to scorch your skin, hot red ashes floating through the air.
[Custer (persuasion) and Kellar (giving a +2 because of his solid post) results:]
The soldiers closest to you cast a quick glance back, seemingly comforted by the words. As if their memories are kickstarted, they turn round to confront the enemy with renewed vigour.
“Behind me!” one of them shouts, and his nearest company men rally into a more tactically sound position.
But the ruin doesn’t seem to be stopping. The assailants are pushing deeper and deeper into the market square. Militiamen are falling under their trample, and as you cast a look back down the long trade road through Esmeltaran you cannot see reinforcements through the smoke.
“They have archers beyond the gate!” says Andrianna, straining to see past the fire-soaked scene, as the Ogre lumbers by, taking out a militiaman with the sickening crunch of his club.
“And more swordsmen are pouring through with each breath!”
It seems true. The militiamen have lost nearly half their footing from the front gate, and are struggling to contain the push into the market square. The assailants are reinforced by their numbers beyond the gate, and with every cloak-clad mercenary that falls, another moves forward to take his place.
Shorjahl and Osvald survey the scene, and lead the charge toward the gatehouse.
[…]
The sheltered alleyway runs parallel to the market square, allowing you a direct shot to the gatehouse.
Ahead, you can see six sentries posted outside the front doors of the gatehouse, with bows in hand. They see you - orcs, all of them - and from 250 feet they take up their arms and fire upon the lot of you.
You charge, but suddenly at the junction ahead, a band of assailants rounds the corner, coming nearly face to face with you.
They are surprised for a second, but the adrenaline from their onslaught has already prepared the swords and axes in their hands.
Most of them are men, but some are orcs. And they rally around a particularly massive orc, who wears a crimson red cloak and holds a battle-axe in each hand.
The red-cloaked orc smiles a broad, toothy smile. Then, they charge.
=========================
OK guys, I’ve attached a diagram so you can see the situation.
Shorjahl, I didn’t want to execute your Burning Hands just yet, because if I had, then I’d count that as the PC’s initiative round, and because no one else attacked it would be time for the assailants to go…and I didn’t want to put you guys at a disadvantage.
So, you can use one or both of your burning hands right now, with the same rolls as before. OR, completely new rolls if you prefer…just decide before you roll.
Beyond, at the gatehouse, you can see that the archers have entered the gatehouse. Likely they will re-emerge from a vantage point to begin raining down the pain.
Andrianna and Geld’s actions will happen during my post rotation, after the assailants attack. We’ll seek to lend a little balance to initiative this way.
EXP: +40 to all (an extra 20 because of Kell and Cuss helping to rally the militia)
Oh, and if it wasn’t clear, Custer and Kellar, your persuasion and instructions snapped the men back into ‘military’ mode, and they’ve reformed their ranks. They should be able to hold, for at least a little longer. They did not follow Kellar’s exact instructions, however, because of the roll. Still, you’ve made an impact, so +XP!

Re: Chapter Two
Without hesitation, Shorjahl leans forward, flexing his corded forearm and stretching it out in a tense claw. With a firm exhale and grunt, he pushes his hand forward, the incredibly loud ring of his bracer reverberating off of the walls and filling everyone's heads with an uncomfortable vibration. He screams, the veins in his neck and forehead standing out, as his dark hair and clothes are suddenly blown back from his wrist by some powerful wind.
A tiny pocket of dense, turbulent air rushes forward, the deep bass coupled with the high-pitched ringing completely deafening everyone over the din of the battle. The small light sliver freezes right in front of the red-clad Orc, then erupts in a massive spherical shockwave. The ash and dust from the battle is cleared from the sphere as all of the orcs are blasted by the earth-shattering peal that emerges from the center of the shockwave.
A roll of thunder and deep bass washes over the party and the streets, followed by a high-pitched whine and ring in the ears.

Re: Chapter Two
Custer ducks behind Shorjahl as the mage's attack rings throughout the air around him. He sucks in air as he readies his shot, and attempts to time it to fly just behind Shorjahl's attack. As the thunder rolls past him, Cuss pivots, drawing his bowstring back as he rotates. He appears from between Osvald and Shorjahl, and fires his arrow straight into the face of the tall commander in the red cloak. As the arrow whistles to it's target, Cuss bends his knees and raises the arches of his feet, ready to dodge any attack coming his way.
[Cunning Action rolling stealth +7]
23
[Rolling advantage assassinate sneak attack +5 against Nazgahl.]
17 Miss! The arrow streaks to it's target, but disappears in the folds of the red cloak with no apparent impact.
[Activating dodge.]
Erlen draws and looses his nocked arrow at the Orc commander from his current position behind Kellar. In the face of the enemy's charge, he begins walking backwards as he reaches for another arrow, moving thirty feet while preparing another shot.
[Rolling ranged attack +3 against Nazgahl.]
11Miss! The shot is high, and whistles past the Orc and to ricochet off the wall of the warehouse on the left well past the Orcs.
[Moving 30 feet back.]
Saavus, seeing the Orc's charge, pushes between Geld and Custer, past Erlen, and takes up position to Kellar's right, hugging between the dragoon and the wall to protect the right flank with his shield. As he moves, he readies a javelin, and when he arrives to his new position, he hurls it at the red cloaked Orc, all while screaming, "Avoreen!"
[Moving to Kellar's right flank.]
[Javlin attack +4 against Nazgahl.]
18Hit! The javelin finds its mark, and the sound of impact is distinct, but it continues past the Orc at a new angel, apparently only grazing the target.

Kellar crouches low, Lance in hand and charges forward!
Kellar uses lunging attack against the red clad orc!
FOR MELEIL! he screams as he attacks with ferocity!
Kellar missed with the first thrust of his lance, but connected with the second action surge used. Attack roll=13+4+1= 18; success!

Re: Chapter Two
When Kellar lunges forward, Osvald stops and breaks left, moving against the alley wall behind some debris.
Drawing back his bow string, he looses an arrow at the Red Cloaked Orc bearing down on them.
His shot flies wide--crouching, he rushes to nock another arrow.
=====
Attack on charging Orc. = miss!

Re: Chapter Two
Shorjahl’s shockwave ripples through the crowd, the assailants screeching in the laneway, some of them stopping to grab at their ears in panic.
[Nazgahl Ogre-Eyes saved, took 5 damage]
[Calculated the rest in the lair]
The commander orc snarls as it charges, scarcely noticing, batting aside Kellar’s attack and sneering as the lance point tears through his cloak.
“Filth! How dare you draw breath - before Nazgahl Ogre-Eyes!”
He screams a low, guttural, bellowing, beastial roar. Then, mouth dripping with saliva, he lunges for Kellar as his cadre charge from behind him, swords raised high.
[Nazgahl Ogre-Eyes uses Rage, gains +2 damage to all attacks (bonus action)]
[Nazgahl Ogre-Eyes uses Frenzy, gaining an additional attack!]
[Nazgahl Ogre-Eyes attacks 3 times vs. Kellar, (one without STR bonus for OH)]
[Attack 1: Hit : 15 DMG]
[Attack 2: Miss : 0 DMG]
[Attack 3: Hit (no +STR) : 4 DMG]
[19 total Damage to Kellar]
The fury of blows staggers the dragoon, the relentless orc’s eyes fiery with rage. The axes overwhelm your defences, biting and tearing through your armor and pulling the breath from your chest.
[…]
As Nazgahl Ogre-Eyes locks horns with Kellar, the rest of the soldiers stream past him and charge the group.
[All soldiers use Second Wind, most recovering fully from Shorjahls attack.]
[All soldiers use Action Surge, gaining a 2nd attack]
[…]
Andrianna braces herself as the enemy charges, holding her shield high as two fighters bare down upon her.

Geld stands up straight, sneering as he dips his hands quickly into a pouch, pulling out a blackened twig.
He closes his eyes briefly, and suddenly an eldritch blue light crackles from between his fingertips, arcing out into the crowd and spitting arcane smoke.
The bolt envelops the orc, who screams out in fury as it singes his flesh.
[Geld casts Witch Bolt vs. Nazgahl Ogre-Eyes, hits]
[Deals 12 Damage!!!]
Andrianna smiles as she watches the spell collide.
“Nice one, gnome.” she mutters, pushing her attackers back with her shield and taking a hard swing with her longsword.

Re: Chapter Two
Saavus raises his shield against the blows from Sout, catching both slashes with resounding dull thumps, but in doing so opened his guard to Sugard, who is able to bite into his scale mail, forcing grunts of pain from the fighter. He keeps the shield high against Sout as he answers Sugard with two quick thrust from his Rapier.

Custer shuffles his weight, dancing away from the first swing, but leaving himself wide open when the blade reverses direction. He yelps in pain as the slash carves a trench through his chest, the blade pulling away covered in crimson and dotting Geld with his blood. Cuss pivots away from the blow, ducking low, as he runs away from the attacker. He cries out, "Mind the bloody line, Andrianna!" She let him through, that soith!
[Cuss disengages, then uses dash for his cunning action, and runs past Erlen, moving 50 feet away from the melee.]
Erlen, seeing the beast move easily through the front line, is quick to act against the foe. As Custer dances away and runs past him, Erlen is moving forward, throwing the bow aside and drawing his greatsword. He greets Abbas with two strong swings of his own, much larger blade, while grunting, "Away" to Geld.
[Erlern moves forward the 25 feet to engage Abbas, and then uses action surge to attack twice at +5]

Re: Chapter Two
Kellar clashes with the orc head on, the orc slashed wildly with his axes! Kellar reacted to the orc's attack and parried as best he could!
The fury of the orc allowed his axes to slide through Kellar's defenses, but he was able to parry the attack at a minimum! Action: Parry (Battlemaster); 1d8=1+3 (dex mod)= 4 dmg averted!
COME ON, Kellar yelled back at the orc, attempting to show no signs of injury! Kellar rears back and then pushes forward with his lance again, at the orc!
The orc reels from the damage from Kellar's Lance!
The wounds Kellar received slowly ooze red blood and changes to a rich blue color...
The blood flows in reverse, back into Kellar's body and the wounds begin to heal!
Actions:
Kellar used his reaction to the orc charge and used parry to absorb some of the damage (still took 14 dmg!)
Kellar uses Second Wind as a bonus action after he razes the orc!

Re: Chapter Two
Shorjahl gasps in shock as the dirty human who charged him managed to smash through his arcane shield. He'd never used it in actual combat before - and was disappointed that his lack of concentration caused him to receive injury. He stumbled backward, and then maneuvered away from his aggressor in order to maximize the amount of enemies he could hit in a single blast.
He stomped his foot forward and pushed with his arm, extending another blast of force into the densest pocket of raiders possible.

Dex Check vs DC 13
Burning Hands Damage 15' cone, spending one action to get into a position without friendly fire: 4 damage

Re: Chapter Two
Ducking low, the ranger narrowly dodges his assailants flashing blade, but the crude iron pommel catches him in the temple sending him reeling for a moment.
Osvald looks up expecting to see his last as the blade comes back around, but suddenly the air in front of Osvald explodes with energy as Shorjahls blast howls down the alley.
'Have to thank our wizard proper for that one.' He thinks grimly, before drawing his blades and seizing the opening.
Unfortunately, the ranger is moments to slow and his blows cut nothing but air before his foe is back upon him.

Attacking with Handaxe and Dagger, Rolling advantage from Shorjahls attack.
HandAxe: 9 + 4 = 13 MISS
Dagger: 9 + 5 = 14 MISS

Re: Chapter Two
Nazgahl Ogre-Eyes writhes in the pain and fury of Geld’s witch bolt, as Kellar’s lance pierces his armor.
Despite the torrent of arcane energy wracking his body, the barbarian hefts his axes high, his chest rippling with cord-like muscles and spilled blood.
“YOU DIE NOW, HUMAN!” the orc screams, leaping forward with a torrent of axe thrusts.
[Nazgahl Ogre-Eyes vs Kellar]
[ATK 1: Hit : 10 DMG]
[ATK 2: MISS]
[ATK 3: MISS]
[10 DMG to kellar]
An axe collides with Kellar’s helm, echoing into his ears with a dull thrumming as bone and blood are mashed beneath…
[…]
Adrianna stands her ground, looking back and watching as Custer clears away from the crowd.
She holds up her shield, easily blocking her martially inept opponents.

The harper spits on the ground, banging her longsword against her shield tauntingly…
[Andrianna vs Qadforre]
[HIT: 8 DMG]
[Qadforre dies]
With a brutal incision, she skewers Qadforre upon her sword and brings it up to face her next opponent...
[…]
Ashes rain from the sky as Osvald stands toe-to-toe with his slack jawed assailant.
The man reaches forward as if to slash, but deftly parries on his back foot, kicking the huntsman in the shin and cutting deeply across his shoulder.
[4 Adur: VS Osvald]
[Critical Hit: 11 DMG to Osvald]
“Ho-oh!” shouts the man tauntingly, brandishing his sword in a bold flourish.
“Looks alike ye won’ be huntin’ deer with tha’ shoulder again, boyo.”
[…]
Shorjahl’s filthy attacker reels as the blast of force catches him in the chest.
“That all you got, mage???"
He lunges forward, but his balance is poor, and the sword sails through the air on the heels of Shorjahl’s robe.
2 Sydul: (VS Shorjahl)

Saavus and Erlen whirl amidst their assailants, parrying and cutting in sharp tempo.
Saavus grunts, as swords and axes batter his armor...

5 Sout: (VS Saavus)
[HIT: 4 DMG to Saavus]
7 Sugard: (VS Saavus)

Geld stands rigidly, holding his hands out as if in seance.
The hairs on his head begin to stand, his moustache quivering.
He mutters a word, and…
Suddenly, the falling corpse of Qadforre lands upon the tiny gnome, staggering him backwards.
He curses, the witch bolt spell faltering. It sputters upon the orc’s flesh…
[Geld, Witch Bolt vs. Nazgahl Ogre-Eyes]
[1 DMG]
The orc laughs out loud, spittle flying from his mouth as he lunges again for Kellar.
“You’ll follow me to hell tonight, lancer…!”

Re: Chapter Two
Kellar does the dance of blades with Nazgahl and attempts to parry his swings! Parry Action= 4+3= 7hp saved!
This would work better if you just die already, Kellar said boldly to the orc!
As Kellar rears back for another attack, Orbaugh screeches at the orc!
Wait! As my lance goes toward the orc, dash along the length and then sting him!
Kellar drives his lance into the heart of the large, red clad orc and twists the lance hard, feeling it crunch through bone and armor!
Attack roll= 16+4+1= 21; success! Damage roll= 5+4+4= 13!
Orbaugh could see the orc flail and shudder at the lance driven through it's chest and halted on Kellar's wrist.
Orbaugh released another low hiss at the orc as life left it's body and fell limp to the ground.
Press on! Collapse on the others, NO MERCY!!! Kellar cried out!
Actions:
Before round, reaction by Kellar to deflect some of the damage.
In round, attack by kellar, and if needed, an attack by Orbaugh to defend his dying master! Lots of rolls!

Re: Chapter Two
Osvald didn't expect the flashy manoeuvre from the filthy attacker, his leg buckled under the kick.
Cursing, his balance failed and he fell to a knee. Barely, the ranger managed to hook the incoming sword thrust away from its deadly course toward his heart with the heel of his hand axe--but the assailant was against faster, with too much leverage and Osvald could only deflect the blow a few inches...
The blade sunk deep between the hardened leather plates of his armour and bit hard into the flesh of his shoulder.
He let out a cry as his left arm went dead, dropping his hand axe and hanging unnaturally at his side. Osvald instinctively wrapped his right around around to hold his limp arm in place, dagger still in hand, eyes still defiant. He had no sensation below the wound in his shoulder, now pouring hot blood down his side. He worried how small the scrap of flesh still attaching it may be.
"...won't be huntin' deer with tha--" His attacker began to taunt him, but already Osvalds head was spinning from pain and bloodloss. The ranger grinned and opened his mouth to offer a caustic retort... but... his hearing was failing and his vision narrowed to a cold tunnel. The embers sailing upward on the billowing smoke left glowing trails of light behind them.
The scent of a city burning seared his nostrils and Osvald stumbled back, trying to stand and falling again on his sundered leg.
His jaw clenched, he managed to growl brutally through his teeth, almost unintelligibly;
"See... You... ...Hell."
And the huntsman collapsed against the alley wall, his dagger clattering harmlessly on the stones.

That's it. Good luck, friends.

Re: Chapter Two
The arcanist gritted his teeth, doing his best to weave and duck away from the coming blows - redirecting and parrying his opponent's weapon strikes with slippery bursts of arcane energy. When he saw an opening in the chaos, he ran forward and past the man, trying his best to blast as many of the fighters as possible. As he lunged forward, bringing his bracer to bear, he saw Osvald fall.
He screamed, but the piercing ring of his blast of energy drowned out all sound in the battlefield.

Rolling their Dex Save again: 7 base roll (probably fail vs DC 13)
Burning/Force Hands Damage: 12 / 6 if save made
My Shield / 17AC ends at the end of this round.
