Shorjahl will hurry to his comrades, ensuring that they live. He doesn't dawdle, quickly bringing Kilik and Cuss down to the ground level. He maintains concentration on his spell, keeping himself aloft for as long as he can. If possible, he'd bring down as much weight with him as he could arcanely lift.

If some were still stranded up without him, he would ascend and descend until he could no longer maintain his focus (even hurting himself to the point of exhaustion if necessary.) If he could no longer summon the arcane strength, he would do everything he could to assist them physically and mentally.

[Osvald Hale]

Osvald thought he was dead. He hurt so bad he wished he was.

Shorjahl's blast had saved them, he laid in his back with his head at the lip of the crater. Blood and vomit flowed from his face in thin streams, drippings from the edge, whipped into mist by the wind as it descended into the void...

He had multiple fractures. Too many to tell.

Focusing on ancient arcane powers he hardly understood, he feels his shattered form begin to knit back together.

He cries out in pain as bones snap brutally back into place.

Custer checks on the injured when they make the bottom. "Well, that's one way to make a short trip of it," he muses with a nervous grin. "Don't worry about the crowbar and hammer, if they're gone, then it's but a small price to keep your good company." Custer offers water to Kellar and Osvald, then waits for things to settle down before asking, "Do we still have the spear?"

Kilik slapped his hands over his body to ensure that he was still intact.

Now, that was nae so bad then was it? He eyed the battered forms of Osvald and Kellar as they picked themselves up from their fall. Yer be sturdier than ye look, lads. Ye bounced higher than me head jus' know. How fare yer? Bones as they should be, an' all that? Now ye see why as wise folk prefer to go under mountains, rather 'an danglin' off the sides o' 'em.

We still have a fair bit o' distance to be going. Do ye need any help, or can yer stand?

Master Dwarf, I should be just fine, thanks for your concern though, said Kellar.

I was worried more for this one than anything else, pointing toward Orbaugh, would be a shame to lose something after we spent the time to care for it, he concluded.

Kellar reaches for the dwarf's hand and gets some help to his feet. Ow. He then rolls his shoulders and shifts his head side to side to crack his back. Following that up with rotating his torso side to side to crack it some more, topped off by a low squat, popping his knees. Ahhh, much better, let's get moving.

He turns to Cus, Little one, the spear is tied off with the rest of my gear that you and Shorjahl brought down, it should still be there, he said.

Wait, where is Anna, he questioned. Kellar looked back up the mountain and couldn't make out her shape along the path they traveled. I don't see her anywhere. I only heard Lord Hale and myself slam against the rocks. I don't normally go for leaving one behind, but our mission is greater than one person, he concluded. If she makes it out of there, or whatever she decided to do, that's on her, we need to keep pushing forward.

Actions:
*Kellar is prepared to scale down the rest of the mountain.
*Kellar checks on Osvald and the others to make sure they're alright.
*Kellar votes to leave Anna behind to her own fate.

In the crater, the fellowship takes stock of their position.

You look above, searching for a sign of Anna. Moments go by, enough for you to catch your breath. But she does not reappear...

Orbaugh coos slightly, still shaking from the terror of the fall. The pseudodragon is unharmed, though his wings still tremble slightly. When Custer inquires as to whether or not Orbaugh can fly, the small creature intones in Kellar's head:

((Master, Orbaugh is so sorry! But Orbaugh, his wings are broken. They cannot flap. I cannot fly.))

The pseudodragon seems to shrink a little bit. Perhaps, with shame.

The fellowship gazes off in the distance, staring out over the canopy of the brown lands and off into the horizon.

Custer notices that flock of birds from before. He can see them more closely now, as they swoop in south, towards them. They are several miles away, of course. But their wingspan is large and dramatic. Their gift of flight is enviable, at this moment.

They disappear behind a cliff face, leaving only the sun and the horizon.

OK guys, lets answer a couple of questions.

Shorjahl, how long does your levitate last for? It's been at least 10 minutes. Does it need a re-cast? You can probably go back up the cliff if you like, but that will take at least another 5 minutes, by my estimation.

There is no sign of Anna. She has simply disappeared.

Orbaugh cannot fly. His wings are broken.

"We ought not be leaving her behind.  Kesian and Grol are in those caves.  If she tries to go back through, and manages to get past that roar, then they will have her.  She hasn't looked of right mind since the crypt.  I should have let her float down with Shorjahl and climbed with ya, Kellar, and mayhaps then we would all have made it down in one piece."  Custer looks down and shuffles a loose rock with one foot.  "Be that as it may, ya right.  All we can do now is push on and hopes we make it back to the hunting camp in time."

He hears Agata, 'You can't leave her up there.'  Custer looks deep in thought, Just how am I going to go about getting her down and getting the horn back in time, love?  Agata is silent, and Cuss turns his gaze to the horizon.  He narrow his eyes, and shields them from the sun with one hand.  "Osvald, this may seem a bit off topic, but what do ya know about flocks of large birds hunting something like us in these parts?"

Custer retrieves his pack and takes a long pull from his waterskin before starting down the slope of loose rocks.  He lets out a short laugh and says, "Somebody once told me that it takes a good fall to really know where ya stand."  As if on queue in some twisted play, the next rock he jumps to shoots out from under his feet and Custer tumbles forward.  End over end he rolls to the sound of clanking tools and sharp rocks sliding against each other, and so it was that Custer found him self first to the bottom of the slope.

[Rolling acrobatics to jump and skip down the rocks, hoping they stay in place as I go. +3]

[Shorjahl]

Shorjahl touches down at the base of the mountain, looking up the hundreds of feet to where his companions are. He had consumed and exerted new levels of power he never knew he had - but was confident he couldn't summon the strength once again to levitate as he had. When setting Kilik and Custer down beside him, he released the vibrating air and intense chiming from his bracer, the skin on his wrist smoking and raw from the heat and energy released there. He put his hands on his knees, collecting his breath for a moment due to the extreme effort it took to lift the five hundred pounds of gear and flesh half a mile down the air.

He did everything he could to rig a system for them to descend and to catch them if they fell - chopping down and piling up hundreds of branches, shrubs, ferns, and leaves in order to create a massive cushion. He will stack the foliage and everything to the highest point he can reach, hoping the halfling and dwarf can rig up something suitable for the others to complete their descent.

Intelligence check to build a giant break-fall cushion, using a lattice work of small branches and what not to pile up in case they fall, they'll break through branch after branch and leaves and what not until they hit the ground, hopefully alive.

He'll also assist whatever the others want to do to help. I'm all out of 2nd level spells, so I can't cast Levitate or Shatter again, and after the ten minutes it expires.

Kellar, in his haste, lost his grip, apparently his right arm wasn't as healed as he had thought. Down the rest of the way, Kellar tumbled after Cus, he tried to steer his fall away from where Cus landed in hopes that he didn't crush him on impact.

Custer lays on the ground staring at the clouds, not too sure if he just fell down a rocky hill or floated down here with Shorjahl. He tries not to move for fear of finding out.

The wizard, halfling and dwarf touch down amidst the dense, thick foliage of the Brown Lands. The second they descend beneath the treeline, the sunny morning sky becomes a dusky orange haze.

Thick mud oozes around your boots, as Shorjahl leads the two fellows at creating a pile of branches and brambles. It is slow going, however, as most of the wood is wet and unmanageable...

[Kellars athletics check failed:]

Kellar's hands slip, and he finds himself in a free slide down the mountainside. The velocity is disorienting, as dust and mud is kicked up around him. His legs and feet dig into the slightly more graded rockface, but he cannot slow himself. Around him, open blue sky and terse rocky dust alternately blinds him, sending him into a dizzying spiral on his way down. He claws for anything to steady himself.

[Kellar takes 3 Damage from the rough tumbling]

Osvald is just atop him, looking down helplessly as the dragoon loses his footing. But another sight troubles him.

From around the cliff-face, the flock of massive birds comes swooping. Massive, mottled brown beasts with a wingspan larger than any man he had ever seen appear across the indigo landscape, diving and flapping menacingly.

They are less than a mile away, and undoubtedly swooping towards them...

OK osvald and kellar. First of all, Osvald you will be making two climb checks with DEX or STR because you missed your post rotation. If both fail, you'll be in a free fall/roll down the mountainface like Kellar, and unable to address the birds as they descend upon you. If you fail once, you'll fall for a moment but will be able to find your grip, sustaining only 1D4 damage from the rocky tumble. If you don't fail you'll be ready and oriented to deal with threats.

Kellar, I need 1 STR or DEX check from you to catch your footing. If successful youll be able to reorient yourself for the descent and deal with any threats. Otherwise, you'll pick up more speed and suffer 1D6 damage from the continued fall.

The birds are still a mile away and cannot be engaged this post rotation. Let me know how you're preparing or planning to deal with them.

Kellar + Osvald are about 400 feet above Kilik, Custer and Shorjahl.

K, Cuss, and Shor, you guys are in the thick of the swamp in the brown lands. Admittedly, your leaf/shrubbery gathering technique is taking way too much time SHor. There just isnt enough dry underbrush. Its all very fresh, wet, and difficult to pull from the trees.

EXP: +20 to Kilik, Custer, Shorjahl, Kellar

[Shorjahl]

Shorjahl looks up in concern as his friends start scraggling down the sloped mountainside. When he sees they stop and are mostly uninjured, he breathes out a sigh of relief. He needs to accelerate the process, and begins calling upon his arcane energies to create a greater latticework, drying each of the plants out until they supple and flexible, but easy to cut and move.

The arcanist pulls out his dagger and begins cutting everything he can, a telekinetic force smashing through bushes and plants as he rips each from their roots. He's completely drenched in the muck and in sweat, but doesn't hesitate to push himself to over exhaustion. When the shriek of the birds overhead pierce his ears, he glares up at them, then returns to his work more feverishly.

Continue doing what I'm doing, I'll keep my same intelligence roll. Using prestidigitation to dry things off, mage hand to give me effectively three hands, and using my dagger to cut bushes. They might have to jump if those birds come.

[Custer Thickett]

Custer struggles with some wet twigs and throws them at the lattice in frustration.  He looks up to the direction of the flock of large birds, and says "Bugger this, they're coming."  Cuss sprints to his gear on the ground.  He removes the rope that has the packs lashed together, and pushes them apart.  He fetches his bow and quiver.  He quickly counts his arrows and sets the bow between his legs to string it.  "Eight.  I've only got eight damned arrows."  

Bow in his left hand, Custer hops and scoots up the rubble to close the distance to Kellar and Osvald.  If he is able to climb 100 feet, he will stop and take up position in the rocks.  He sets his feet and nocks and arrow, ready to fire. A rock he jumps to shoots out from under his feet and Custer tumbles backwards. End over end he rolls to the sound of sharp rocks sliding against each other, and so it was that Custer found him self back at the bottom of the slope.

Kellar tries to steady himself as he tumbles down the mountainside (Strength Check= 15+4= 19! Yay!)!

Kellar's feet dig into the sludgy mountainside and he continues to slide down in a controlled manner, surfing the sludge to the bottom near Cus.

It was a bit rough at the start, but it seems I righted myself and caught up to you little one, Kellar said, looking down at Cus.

Looks like we'll have company soon enough, he continued as he grabbed his gear from the bundle near Shorjahl and got re-geared.

Not risking the Uni-spear, he fastens it to his back, under his shield and sticks his javelin in the mud and leans his lance against his shoulder, ready for action!

Osvald rises wearily, still shaken from the impact. His freshly fused bones felt awkward, his whole body ached with remembered pain.

'It'll take some strong drink to forget that tumble indeed.'

Turning to face the swampy forest below, he spies the birds in the distance, approaching ominously in the skies...

Just as he's about to call out to Kellar, the dragoon looses his footing as tumble down the hill side. Not wanting to be left alone and vulnerable away from the party, the Woodsman begins a hasty descent.

Osvald slides down the mountainside in haste, controlling his descent. The earth beneath his hands is infinitely more forgiving than the crumbling precipice that sent him to his doom previously.

As he approaches the canopy, he can see Kellar landing below him.

[Osvald, Nature results]: The birds are Rocs. Undoubtedly. Massive, predatory creatures with enormous wing-spans and razor sharp beaks and claws.

The huntsman had been on the receiving end of a Roc attack once, on the open side of a mountain path. Fleeing had been the most practical option.

Osvald’s head dips beneath the tree canopy as he glides down onto Shorjahl’s pile of trees and twigs.

The fellowship holds their breath for a minute, in the midst of the murky brown lands. Rotted trees and sinking mud pools surround them, and above the dense tree canopy they can hear the flapping of wings as the Roc’s glide overhead.

But they do not descend into the forestry. And after a moment, the thicket settles into silence. Hot air blowing through the claustrophobic glade.

After a few moments travel, the foothills of the Brown Lands open up onto a small ridge, and the fellowship can see clearly the topography of their journey.

Hours to the southwest, and well out of sight, lies Hoat’s Pasture, where Cherous and his horse await the horn.

You can see that to the south, the rocky cliff face curtails along a thick wood. Dense, and almost certainly slow-moving.

Slightly more westward, a snaking stream hugs the thick wood and also moves south. It is an exposed passway, but also thinner. It would certainly be the more expedient journey.

OK guys, you can see before you that the ridge you stand upon descends into a thick forest that leads southward, towards Hoat’s Pasture.

There’s also a more open, perhaps even more direct (because it looks to curve westward) path along the bank of a small river.

You could also elect to go straight east, or west to find another way to pursue. Though, it is roughly 9 AM, leaving you less than 10 hours before the Esrelembar, and Maleil’s death (if indeed, the legends are true…)

Your best guesses put your journey through the brown lands at between 8 and 12 hours, depending…

[Shorjahl]

Shorjahl smiles warmly once he sees all of his comrades have descended the cliff, alive and (mostly) intact. "We haven't much time to get back with the horn, all of our struggle, Anna..." he pauses, a look of troubled and concealed grief on his face. He continues, "I won't let us waste our sacrifices." He uses his bundle of rope to start lashing as much of the large bush pile he's latticed together, forming an enormous bundle.

He hefts the bundle (with a little help of his arcane power) onto his back, and attaches it to his backpack. "Carry as much as you can, we can use it to float down the river." Once Shorjahl leads them to the banks of the water, he gauges its flow and compares the ground path that runs beside it - estimating which would be more expedient.

[If River is more expedient]

Shorjahl bundles all of the wood, and any other promising pieces on the side of the river, together in order to make a rudimentary bushel raft, or several as the weight and current allows. He'd enter the water and start floating downstream.

[If Path is more expedient]

Shorjahl grins and shrugs, "Actually I think it'll be easier if we just walk. Let's make haste," leading the way down the path, pushing things aside with his telekinetic wedge in front of him, cutting what needed to be cut with his dagger.

The grim smile on Kilik's face fell as the great birds swooped overhead Ack...they looked a wee smaller in the distance... he breathed a quiet prayer of thanks as they passed on.

The dwarf smiled at Shorjahl's enthusiasm. I dunno if we be a raft buildin' sort. At the least, it would take time to lash it all together, an' we could jus' spend that time walking... But it's nae my area o' expertise.

Let's head along the river, keep to the banks, we'll be able to move fast along it, Kellar said. We'll be out in the open but it'll keep us moving fast, we're running out of time, he continued.

I'll bring what wood I can Shorjahl if you want to go by water, I'd feel safer running along the shore, we would be sitting ducks in the water, he finished.

Little one, on your feet, we need to get rolling, he said as he helped him up.

Custer takes Kellar's hand as he says, "I'll help ya with the raft.  We'll be needing a long stick or two for pushing along off the banks.  Do ya thinks we have 'nuff rope left for this?  I don't know if we have the time to fell a tree.  Ya know wood'll sink once it gets wet 'nuff, right?"

[Custer will help anyway he can with the tools he has left.  If large pieces of wood are available, Custer will notch them with a hand axe for a better fit for his knots.]

Osvald looked warily, and wearily from the crest of the foothill.

"We've cut it close enough as is--Shorjahl, there isn't time to build a raft strong enough to carry the five of us, Orbaugh, and all of our gear. No telling if the stream even continues on deep enough for us to use. We should take that path, but stick to walking the bank..."

He turns westward and strikes out at the head of the group.

"Kellar, ask your dragon what lies ahead of us, perhaps the little fellow even knows a hidden trail?"

The fellowship walks hurriedly along the bank of the river, the fast moving stream reflecting the clouds that lull overhead.

To your west, the thick forest of the brown lands rises up out of the muck. But the rocky shore of the river makes travel far easier, without scum sucking at your boots.

Orbaugh titters away in Kellar’s mind,

[Orbaugh, History results:]

The pseudodragon is delighted at the question, and seems to take pride in his knowledge of the region.

((Orbaugh know all about Brown Lands! This river, orcs call it the Anduruk. But men call it the small leg. It’s haunted, you know! Orbaugh seen it. Dead orcs. Ghosts!))

Orbaugh continues on his story, telling tales and legends of the Brown Lands as the fellowship walks astride the stream.

After an hour or so of walking, you round a bend and see, in the distance, a large humanoid crouched along the bank of the river.

As you approach, you instantly recognize Uru, the shaman from the orc den you patronized an evening past.

He lays aside the stream, pulling himself along with his hands. One of his legs his bloodied and torn, an arrow embedded in it. His breathing is laboured, his elegant fur cloak battered and tattered.

Uru catches sight of you, and a panicked look brooches his face.

“No! Run! Run!” he yells, his voice hoarse.

Listening closely, you can hear a dramatic rustling not far off, in the treeline to the west.

OK fellows. You’re upon Uru. You can continue south along the river, if you’re to heed his warning. Or north, of course.

East would put you in the deep, fast-moving river. And west would put you in the forest, where the sound is coming from.

Uru looks visibly panicked, and partially delirious. A trail of blood follows from behind him.

EXP: +20 XP to all

[Shorjahl]

Shorjahl crouches down, hoping not to be seen by whatever pursues Uru. "Let us not allow his and Anna's sacrifices to be in vain. Kilik or Osvald, if you can quickly heal him without slowing us down, do so. Otherwise, we must make haste." The arcanist begins sprinting as fast as he can, trying to prevent any Orcs or wargs from following their trail. He quickly drags a magical energy behind them to throw off their trail and smooth out their footsteps as much as possible, without slowing down.

As Shorjahl crosses by the Shaman's path, he touches him briefly and unleashes a web of complex arcane energy over his body. He nods quietly to the Orc, gratitude on his face, then continues running.

The sight of the wounded orc stirred no pity in Kilik's heart. Yer brought this on yerselves when ye opened yer doors to Cyric. Marthammor Duin has no power to heal ye...

He turned his back and hurried after Shorjahl to the south...but as he passed a strange though occurred to him: But yet, when we were lost in darkness and betrayed, yer gave us aid...of a sort. An' such things please the Watcher-Over-Wanderers... He licked his lips and peered into the forest where the sounds of pursuit drew nearer.

Holy Marthammor he began in quick, low dwarvish ye know I'd ne'er ask yer power to aid a child of the One-Eyed Bastard. But this'n did us some service in a tight place...an' I figure if he happens to sneak away from whatever's chasin' him while I happen to be coverin' our own trail, well, there can't be much harm in that...right?

He raised his hammer with the partially-melted symbol of his god etched into its head, and mist began to swirl up from the surface of the stream in response. Hurry, now he called to the others yer don't wanna be lost in the fog. He channeled the energy of Marthammor Duin, shaping and sculpting the thickening mist, spreading it over the area like a huge blanket of shifting grey and white. He held the energy as the others moved through, keeping the path as clear as he could. Keep one foot in the water an' one on land, and yer'll make it through. He turned back to the wounded orc as he gave himself over to the spell and the fog swallowed him, hissing Go where ye will...it's more than ye deserve!

He hurried away into the fog.

Casting fog cloud with a level two spell-slot: 80' diameter of heavily-obscured fog fills the area around the orc, and will last for one hour (or until my concentration is broken). Hoping that can help us (and maybe even Uru) get away.

[Custer Thickett]

Custer slings his bow over his back and kneels beside Uru as Shorjahl and Kilik pass.  He whispers, "I'm a not knowing how you go here, old one, but it is not of coincidence that we're a crossing paths again."  Custer drags his right hand down his face, displaying his distress at the situation.  From his kneeling position, he looks to the woods, then back down at Uru.  "I'll not be leaving you again.  Come on, give me an arm.  Can ya walk with me help?  We needs to be making haste.  It'd shame me father to find out I died trying to save an Orc."  Custer pulls one of Uru's meaty arms over his shoulder, and looks up to where his blue friend is quickly being obscured by a misty fog.  "Kellar, help me."

[Custer is going to try to help Uru hobble along with them, with or without help from others.  If Uru resists, Custer will punch him in the face as hard as he can, which is quite feeble by Orc standards.]

[If Kellar stands looking at Custer, but takes no action to help him or tries to continue past, Custer will do and say the following.]

"Kellar, do ya see this symbol around me neck?  It's the Golden Lady of Luck.  Sometimes I be asking for luck and if it weren't for it, then there are a many tight spot I wouldn't of seen me way out of.  Other times I'm asked to be serving luck, and this one did his duty to it for me.  We'll do the same, see?"

[When Osvald comes near, Custer will ask him the following.]

"Hale, this arrow in Uru's leg.  Be it fletched by Orc, Human, or Halfling hands?"

Orbaugh said this river is known to the orcs and is home to ghosts. We'll need to get him up and moving if we're to do this. Grab some rope and cut a length, we may need to put a tourniquet on his leg, he concluded.

Kellar helps Cus with getting the wounded orc upright and stabilized. Let's see how bad this is, Kellar said.
